Put a Red Dot Sight on My HW77SE

I had my HW77SE set up with a Williams peep sight and globe front sight and liked how light weight it feels compared to my other rifles with scopes.  It shoots as accurate as my eyes can see. 

I have 42 yard lane setup right now to shoot outside. I am still accurate with the "iron sights" at that distance, but not as good as I want.  I installed a red dot sight today, with the intent of keeping the rifle light, but maybe pick up a little accuracy. 

It helps a little (I think).  It was rather windy today so hard to really get it dialed in on bulls eye, but getting close. 

It was a great day for some fall shooting other than the wind, but I think that only helps sharpen skills.

I like those little Bushnell TRS red dots. Have them on several 22 pistols.

For me, under ideal conditions, not a whole lot of difference between a peep/globe setup and a red dot at those distances (but the red dot definitely has the edge for me over open sights). On a dark day, though - and we do get a lot of those - the red dot is much easier and less fatiguing for me to use. I can shoot longer with the red dot before my eyes give out. Fun to use, too.

A couple of little tricks I use with a red dot. I turn down the brightness to where I can just see the dot without lot of effort. This helps me get the sharpest possible dot. I also sometimes use the top of the dot as my aiming point to get more precision, rather than placing the entire red dot over the target. Anyway, using a red dot is like any other sight, just need to practice with them a bit, but I do think you'll enjoy yours.

Thanks!....I pulled this red dot off my HW75 to try it out on the rifle.  You are right not a lot of difference in accuracy, but the red dot is less fatiguing on the eye.  At 51 I'm very slowly conceding to needing a scope to get small groups.  The eyes just done have what they had 20 or 30 years ago... :-)

Using the top of the dot for aiming is a good idea. I will have to try that.   I do keep the power low on the dot so it stays small, but it is a 3 MOA sight so the dot is not a pin point at farther distances. 

Still liking it on the rifle and looking forward to a day with still air so I can see what I can squeeze out of it.  The HW77 is a real sweet shooting rifle!!!!

Yes, that is the one thing that really blows about getting older!!!  That and looking in the mirror and thinking...That can't be accurate....lol

Very nice,I'd be interested in knowing if it holds up to the springer recoil impulse,so give us an update. Also,how did you fit a globe front sight to the HW77?

The wind is a little calmer today so got some more shooting time in.

Bulls Eyes are 3" at 42 yards.  10 shots at each bulls eye.  The hits on the white paper are from earlier sighting in. :-)

Not a tack driver with the red dot, but I think it will be my new favorite hunter with being light and quick on target with the red dot.

The globe sight is an HW part and the rifle has a factory cut dovetail on the muzzle.  Just removed the blade sight by taking the screw out.

I have had these red dot sights Bushnell TRS-25 on a couple of Beeman P1's and they have done just fine with the recoil on the pistols.

Most of my AG shooting is paper punching at the range, so I can usually just wait things out for better lighting to use peep and iron sights. If I was doing a lot of field shooting or hunting, though, I'd have no hesitation swapping out a peep sight for a red dot if I didn't want to go with a scope. In fact, I might just try a red dot on a couple of the guns that now have peeps, just out of curiosity. See what you've done?

Joanie, thanks and give it a go...it's a lot of fun with the red dot. As you probably already know these are 3 MOA red dots so from my calculations that is 1.3195 at 42 yards for how large the red dot appears on the target....so I feel pretty good with the results.

I will, Loren. Just happen to have a TRS 25 in the drawer and waiting to find a home.

I have used 4 MOA dots on 3" bullseyes at 50 yards. That's right at the edge of small enough to use a center hold on the bullseye and still se some of the bull around the red dot, but just barely - and it must be a good sharp dot like what I get on our Ultradot 25s. Dropping down to a 3 MOA is better, so at 40 yards. a 3 MOA should be comfy to use on those 3" bulls.
