It has been a while since I was able to hunt; but this afternoon, I was back in the woods.

I went out about 3:00 p.m. under clear skies with a temperature of about 65ºF degrees and light wind from the East. After locking the bicycle to a tree, I walked about 15 steps and got behind a tree to spray my clothes because the mosquitos were out. Even before I had time to put on my camo gloves, a Fox Squirrel started barking at me. Well, it barked itself to death (the JSB through the head helped). I moved over and took pictures, put it in the bag, and move about four steps and sat against a tree. In the picture, you might be able to see the bulging left eye.

Maybe 20 minutes later, movement above me materialized into another Fox Squirrel that was moving toward a huge Hickory tree I had been watching. I stopped it with a lip-squeak and unloaded a JSB into its head. DRT

I continued hunting and saw another that didn't offer a shot and heard a couple more. All things considered, it was a very good afternoon.

Thanks for the good words everyone. It feels great to be back home and hunting my favorite woods again. A month in West Virginia is a long time to be away from home - it was sort of a working vacation. <--- The emphasis really needs to be placed on working.

I spent about 3 hours walking and sitting on opening day but they never let me get close and/or scampered by at top speed. Finally, I had to relieve myself and - you guessed it - one came by at about 25 yards and stopped. I'll spare you the details but by the time I "finished fumbling" and grabbed my gun that I had leaned against a tree he was gone. If I didn't know better I'd swear he was laughing! I've heard of this happening to other hunters but this was the first and hopefully last time for me.

On a side note, animals love to come out when you least expect it. Happened to a hunting partner in front of my dad one time, got out of his stand to go #2 and dad watched the deer walk right up to him! Brother did it a few years back too, was sick in the AM and there was fog everywhere. Saw a buck coming while climbing back into stand and shot, thought it was a smaller buck...turned out to be the biggest anybody in our family has gotten, a dandy ten pointer.

Moral of the story: if the hunting is slow, take care of business!

Back to the regularly scheduled programming!

Thanks Dave. The Discovery is really performing well.

I need to say something about the hearing aids (EARS). While hunting Sunday afternoon, I had both set for the loudest program; (there are four programs to select from.) I was able to hear squirrels moving through the trees, nut cuttings falling, squirrels barking, and all the other sounds of the woods.

Guys, if you are in doubt as to whether or not you should get hearing aids, check with a reputable audiologist/doctor. There are instruments that will tell how significant your hearing loss is. And the doctor I chose offers a trial period. There is a cost (sort of like a restocking fee - $100) if you don't like or can't get along with the hearing aids. They do take some getting used to; but, I sort of forgot I was wearing them after about the fifth or sixth day. [I almost got in the shower with them on once.] And I can now hear when my Judy calls me "vieux chien".

My life is better because of these hearing aids; and today I found out that my insurance paid for all but $200 of the cost of the exams, return visits, and the hearing aids.

11/19/15 - Thursday
The fields and woods are very wet after the heavy rains yesterday and I had to leave the bicycle about halfway into the fields.
The squirrels were very active today. I hunted until about 10:30 a.m. and collected four. I did knock another one out of the tree; but it crawled away before I could get to it. I just hate that!

I stopped hunting after the fourth squirrel because I had such a long walk back to the bicycle. Four Fox Squirrels certainly can slow a guy down.

Thursday afternoon 11/24/15
I hunted on a permission for about three hours. The squirrels were active but not foolish. I shot at two and got the second one. It dropped from a body shot and had to be finished off. He was a very mature Gray that never knew I was there until he took the hit. I had to leave at about 3:00 p.m. to move some furniture; but I plan to go back to that place. The Discovery strikes again!

Thanks Dave and all of you. It is fun sharing my hunts with all of you. And here is today edition:
The weather forecast was for "warm and windy." Sometimes you want the forecast to be wrong - but not this time! I was on the bicycle riding out to the woods at sunrise and the temperature was in the upper 60s. The breeze had already started. As soon as I got into the woods, I went about 10 yards to the right along the edge and stopped. About five minutes later a little female started moving toward my location. The first shot dug a little groove along the shoulder. She ran about eight or ten feet along the branch and stopped. The kill shot was through the head and she dropped within sight - a few twitches and it was over. After I reloaded, I looked around and saw another coming down a tree about five steps to my left. This one couldn't figure out what I was and kept looking at me from one side of the tree, then from the other side. It finally decided that I was wrong for the location and moved up about ten feet and started barking. Well, it was soooo close, I missed! <--- That is my story and I am sticking to it! After the shot it moved higher in the huge tree and disappeared. I moved on and saw one more that was changing its ZIP Code.
The winds kept building and I decided to end my hunt about 8:45 a.m.
