I have finally taken the time to take the HW 30 .177 to the basement and run through a bunch of different pellets at 20 yards.  So far the Beeman Field Target Specials 8.64 gr. is giving me consistent groups of 5 of less than 3/8".  Its fun to see a hole from 5 rounds not much bigger than the end of a pencil eraser. Five other varieties gave groups spreading from 1/2" to 3/4".  With the Beeman 8.64s I can actually see changes in my impact point with only 1 or 2 clicks of the UTG scopes adjusting knobs. I only have about 40 more varieties and weights of pellets to go through from the 11 lbs. of pellets I picked up at an estate sale.  Tough job but I volunteered.
I started with RWS Superdomes and had one group equal to the Beeman and then it spread to 1/2".  How much was me that caused the spreads and how much was the pellets remains to be seen. These Beeman pellets were made in Germany.  On Beeman's website the pellets they are selling now are made in China.
I've got to spend more time with my two Dianas.  The 350 and 54 both need a 50 yard range outside.  I've found more needles in haystacks than calm days in Kansas.  The HW 30 is just a pleasure to shoot.

Try some JSB's ....7.33 7.87 or 8.44. Known to perform= consistently.

Our HW30S seems to prefer the JSB Exacts, though I've never tried the Beemans.

We have a short outdoor shooting season, up here in the north words. Guess which springer sees the most use when we move indoors to shoot over our long winters? Yup, the HW30S. It's a wonderful indoor shooter, too. Have grown so attached to the gun, that I'm actually thinking of getting another one as a backup, just in case. That's a sure sign of addiction, I know, but the thought of not being able to grab our HW30S and not shoot it whenever I get the urge, terrifies me. Maybe I soul get two more...

I have had several R7/HW30s, and no matter how many brands/weights I tested, I always found JSB's to be the most accurate. Many others shoot very well in them, depending on the size of the leade in your particular gun, but overall, but JSB in the 8.44 or 7.9 consistently produced the tightest groups.

I can't wait to get my hands on new-to-me R7 in .17, too. I regretfully had to sell mine all off many years back, but as Joanie mentioned, they are wonderful indoor guns, and they make living through a northern winter tolerable. Yes, they are very addicting, and I need a fix!

They can be a bit less stable in wind, but at R7 velocities, they shoot noticeably flatter and faster. For yard, garden, and bird feeder patrol, especially, they can really shine!

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the 7.33's, they can be really good, too.

I used to shoot them out of my .17 P1's and P3's a lot, but they didn't group quite as well out of my R7's as the 8.44's and 7.9's, especially in wind, or over 30 yards, if I remember correctly.

Seriously, though, it is hard to go wrong with any of the three weights mentioned when shootng sub-FAC HW springers.

At 10 meters, yes, but not at 20 meters. Don't have that much room in the basement.

Since I have a good supply of the R10s and use them in a lot of our 10 meter pistols, did use them at 10 meters in the HW30S and they did just fine, but they're pricey. The Meisterkugeln Rifle are less expensive and they do shoot a bit better for me in the HW30S, so now using them. The R10s are probably on the light side for the HW30S, anyway. I suspect the MRs will do just fine at 20 yards. In my experience, wadcutters don't start falling off the accuracy bandwagon till you're a bit farther out.

I have never been a JSB fan boy and typically prefer H&N FTT, Barracudas, Crosman CPLs & CPHs but I will say my HW30S shoots JSB RS 7.33gr pellets better than any I own and I own a lot.  Buy some.  I always thought my HW30S shot great but when I tried some JSB 7.33 gr pellets the rifle went to a whole different level.

Used to shoot wadcutters exclusively, back in the early/mid '80s, 'til I started hangin' with FT guys. That's in an HW35, FWB124 and RWS 6Ms. Indoors and outdoors at way longer ranges than 10-20 meters.

Have my HW 30 scope sighted in using German made Beemans Field Target 8.64.  Using US Army 25 meter small arms targets only at 20 yards.  Following the majority of recommendations I shot 5 shot groups of JSBs:
7.82 Express:  3/4" group 1" over bullseye.
8.44 Diablos:   3/8" group 1/2" over bullseye.
10.22 Exact Heavy:  1/2" group, 1/2" over bullseye.
Followed up with a group of 8.64 Beemans:  3/8" group dead center.
What has really surprised me is apparently if you sight in your scope using one particular brand and weight of pellet you need to stick with that exact pellet for future target satisfaction of accuracy.  I thought the flight characteristics of different brands but nearly the same weight pellets would be closer than what I am seeing.  The learning curve continues to grow and I'm a long ways from the top of it.
