First of all I'd like to thank you all for helping me with my pellet size issues

But I'm about ready to give up on this thing. I just so happen to have found a tin of Crosman 7.0 wads that fit before I ordered the JSBs. They fit a little better so I started the break in. The rifle is dieseling like a champ even after about 75 rounds and smells like an electrical fire. Then suddenly it badly detonated. It was so bad the breach/barrel opened due to the explosion (not a dry fire). The pellet was lodged and I carefully removed it. The gun now fires FOUR inches too high at 9 yards, even with the sights maxed. I have tried closing the breach gently and everything I can thing of besides bending the barrel of my rifle. Also the Rekord trigger is not what I was expecting. Even after loosening the second stage there is a distinct second stage creep and notch feeling that make my T06 feel like heaven. I'm a bit flabbergasted that I'm experiencing issues with one of the best low powered springers with such high marks

This is exactly the light weight gun I was looking for so I can carry it around easily. Has anyone experienced this? Any advice would be great!!!! UPDATE: I suspected some hey hole issues so I shot many rounds at some thick canvas cloth. Unfortunately every pellet is smashed sidewise. There is no clipping of the breach when closing either. These puppies are keyholing at about 5 yards. An incredibly short distance. This one will be going back ;(

How can the breach explosion bend the barrel?

May I ask where you bought your HW30S?
I just bought one myself from Pyramyd and have no galling issues at all. I'm approaching 2000 rounds and its just getting better. Not trying to make you feel bad just saying.
If it's from PYRAMYD just send it back.
Can't think what the problem could be unless you oiled something.
Hope you get an answer. Lots of smart people here.

Try setting up targets at 1, 5, 10 yards and look at the holes. It is possible that the canvas is deforming the pellets while going through target paper might not.

Do you have a chronograph to get velocity information?

Did the dieseling stop? Any idea on the source of oil?

Do you have resources to dismantle it and look at the internals? Anyone nearby that works on them? Don't do this if it brand-new and under warranty. If it is brand-new talk to the people you bought it from. Call the importer and tell them your woes!

Sounds like a real mystery. A highly reputable company and great rifle type shouldn't do this at all!!!

I would escalate my inquiries from this site, which while full of experts, won't be able to say "send it back for replacement or repair."

Every pellet = Paper tearing in all likelihood
back up target with a stiffer backing and dollar to donuts no more key-hole looking holes.

No sir I don't have a chrony. I dont want to fool with it because it's still under PA warranty.I suppose the canvas could be giving enough to "roll" the pellets, I'll try again. Motorhead. No paper was involved in this test. I fired about 100 pellets and ALL of them did this to a varying degree.

Sure. I used a sheet of canvas as a backstop. Works pretty well.

Perhaps try some paper to see what kind of holes it makes. Wadcutters should make nice round holes with almost no tearing.

Sorry let me me elaborate. The paper I used looked keyholed. Behind the paper was my thick canvas backing. Every pellet has smashed sideways into it. I have checked and double checked to see if the breach was crushing the skirts and it is not.

Shoot at a paper bag densely filled with dirt. It should give you nice clean holes.

So far as that goes, I would bet the canvas has too much 'give', and the pellet is going to tear a swatch out of your paper target in front of it, rather than punching a clean hole. Among other suggestions here, mine is this. Grab a cereal box, or shoe box in preference to a cardboard box. Reason is thinner stock. Put a stack of newspapers or magazines inside. It may, or may not stop the pellet, depending on how thick you can pack it. However, it WILL provide a solid 'wall' to support your target paper. This will really confirm what you think you see.

second+ your 30's is swimming in lube= Screws up everything.
3rd== rekord trigger= always needs to be tweeked. seldom are they perfect out of the box.

Shooting at 5 yards? not realistic. But given your description of the issues I'll stand by my statements...
Best thing for you in MO = send it back= reset= start over.

The pellets are probably not "keyholing" if that can be taken to mean that they are "flying" sideways into the target. It is difficult to imagine how they would do that within a five yard distance.

The Rekord trigger is rarely a problem and should not be here unless it was an unusual unit that was improperly set from the factory. A trigger like the Rekord should not be adjusted unless one knows what he is doing and certainly not adjusted just because it can be or that's what someone does all the time. One should become familiar with it before messing with it. On guns on which trigger adjustment is possible, messing around with it sends more of them back to the shop than almost anything else.

If this air rifle was purchased new and is under warranty it should be sent back.

To belabor the point - send it back. But be ready to answer the question: Did you put oil in it? What else did you do?

If you are curious do the test with 3 targets in sequence relatively close together. HOWEVER, use real NRA type targets not typing / copy paper. The target stock is designed to give way and leave relatively clean holes.

Second curiosity, if you have a set of dial micrometers, measure the hole at the muzzle. It should be 0.177 or very close. Also measure the breech hole - same thing, it should be a bit bigger than the muzzle but still very close to .177" Most of the good rifles have choked bores to improve accuracy. Wonder if they put the barrel in backwards???

I can shoot the same rifle at the same distance into NRA targets and get clean holes while next to it I get ragged messes in copy paper.

First, if you haven't sent it back and are still willing to investigate what's going on, Yrok was willing to help - if it was me, I would jump on his advice/suggestion and report back (don't wait until your 30 day return period expires!), I've never seen Yrok's advice yield anything but pure gold ...

The 'shoot the bottom of a can' suggestion was offered as an alternate method to check for key holing.

All that detonation is something else entirely. Never hearda one that blew the breech open.
