Vortek HW95-(HW85,HW98) PG2 Tune Kit for R9?
«

I'm planning on installing a tune kit on my new .22 Bemman R9. I understand the R9 is based on the HW95, so am I right to think that the Vortek HW95 PG2 kit is the right one for my gun?
Do you recommend changing out the piston seal with the Vortek while I'm at it?
My primary goal is to reduce twang. After coming from a cheap gas ram gun, the twang bugs me.

R9 = HW95. I 've not used a Vortek seal, but I change out OEM seals when I open up a gun.

I would definitely replace the piston seal unless the factory one is pristine. Which gas ram gun did you have? "Twang" is usually associated with wire springs.

I have a .22 Benjamin Trail NP. I was hopeing for a similar twang-less shot cycle out of the more expensive R9, but better accuracy than my Trail NP. The video reviews I came across gave me the impression the R9 had an exceptionally smooth shot cycle. So, I was a bit surprised by the twang and associated noise. My later internet searches confirmed what I'm experienceing is normal. I think I could learn to live with it, but if $100 kit clears it up, why not?
I ordered the kit with the seal. I read one poster's suggestion to leave the piston in when adding a tune kit to avoid re-lubing the piston. I'm on the fence about that, so I ordered the seal with the kit- it's only an extra $4. I'll either use it right away, or have an inexpensive spare.

Any idea where I can find a how-to for disassembly? I've only found videos for HW95s that don't seem to have any spring preload.

i used the vortek kit to get rid of the buzz in my 95. we also polished the new spring end( one would think you wouldn't have to) and the seal that came in the kit was too tight and hd to be turned down a bit. results though were well worth the cost.

Steve- When you installed the Vortek kit in your 95, was disassembly a matter of using a spring compressor to counter the preload on the end cap, then tapping out the pins? Roughly how many inches of preload are there? Trying to determine if the clamp I use for a spring compressor for my Trail NP will work on my R9. Any advice would be appreciated.

yes, the awesome video on youtube is an under 12 lb rifle. you will need a spring compressor. as i recall , only a few inches of spring...maybe 4. otherwise everything else is the same as video.

X2 on the pre load. Dropped a PG2 in my 95 a while back. I was able to use the new seal. Make sure there are no burs. I de burred and honed my 95 to be on the safe side. Really impressed with Vortek. Good luck!

When I open my R9, I just use a square rubber eraser to push the part into the tube, and then turn it to remove. No spring compressor was needed. Like the guy does in this video around the 2:40 mark:

Thanks for the link. That was just what I needed. It took me a while to recognize that I needed to take out those four square blocks, but once I did I had the spring out in seconds.
Am I right in thinking I need to pull the barrel in order to remove the piston? I can't seem to get the cocking arm out of the way.
I've tried removing the barrel but I'm not having any luck. Can't seem to budge the screw for the barrel pivot. I don't want to force the barrel pivot screw so much that my screwdriver slips and I gouge the gun so I may just install the kit minus the seal.

Remove the barrel (break open to take load off of bolt) to lube the pivot bolt and shims.
Please don't reassemble it without lubing (like the guy in the vdo) the piston, seal, comp tube, barrel pivot shims/bolt, shoe/slot, spring. I use an old seal taped to a door jamb/facing and lean into the preload, action horizontal, to reassemble.

I'm still having no luck removing the barrel. I've broken the barrel open to relieve the stress on the pivot bolt, but still can't get it loose. I've even tried flat head screwdriver bit attached to a small socket wrench and couldn't get it to budge. I'm getting slight deformation on the screw slot on the bolt from my efforts.
Any recommendations? Am I doing something wrong?

I've got the main spring out. In the video I watched, the pivot bolt came loose with little effort. Makes me wonder if I'm doing something wrong.

Are you concentrating your efforts on the side with the solid slot?

Yes, I started on the side with the solid slot, but have tried both sides.

maybe try it with the barrel locked. as I recall, either when disassembling or reassembling mine, cant remember witch, but it was much easier with it strait. Dont ask me why.
