I am not looking for or expecting mouse fart quiet, but quiet enough not to need hearing protection nor scare off hogs at 100 yards. Hog hunting at night in TX at 100 to 200 yards would be the main job for this gun. I know I could get a device for a powder burner but I rather use an airgun.

Any suggestions?

STEVE i don't know if the cricket in 357 is quite,but the 25 cal is the quietest, air rifle i have never heard' puff and thwack goes the target, i watched a guy take 4 shots at a nutter and it did not even hear the gun go off,so if there is a quite big bore 'a cricket might be the one.

There's lot of talk about the American Air Arms .357 Slayer being very quiet. Not too bad for a 275FPE airgun.

Maybe not off the shelf but if you made a big bore specific ldc there is no reason why you cant get it as quiet as any other pcp.

I believe that this .457 is equipped with an LDC to bring it to manageable noise levels. It's a beast from what I can see in Cold King's videos.

I don't know your skill level, but you'd need to be really good to hit much of anything at 200 yards with an airgun. You're not shooting a .30-06 at 3200 fps. You're shooting a bigger projectile at a slower speed. I'm not saying it can't be done, but at 200 yards, you'd almost need to have a bench rest and have the gun in a vise to hope to hit a specific target, and you'd likely need 2 or 3 shots to get there on target.

It would be from a bench inside a raised stand.

If I have to limit myself to 100 yards that might work. I would just bring the 30-06 along for farther shots. I have shot my muzzle loader at 100 yards, so I am hoping that is similar.

My hope is that with a big bore air guns I can shoot more than one pig at a time. They show up in big groups but scatter as soon as they hear a gun shot.

If you have a bench rest to shoot from and you can train the pigs to stand on the 200 yard mark, then you should be able to take a second one before the first one hits the ground.

If you zero your scope at 200 yards there's no reason you can't do this in your set up I guess. Sounds like you've got the chops to do it.

If it is as hard as you say I doubt it. I am a mediocre shooter on my best day. On my worst days I am not sure I could hit water from a canoe.

Honestly 100 yards would make me happy, like I said I can always bring along the 30-06 for anything farther.

Or is even 100 yards out of the question?

Perhaps I should stick to PBs for this task.

All shooting is an exercise in physics/ballistics. But with Airguns the effects of the variables are amplified. Since it's moving slower, wind will have more time to act on the projectile causing horizontal movement. It isn't that PBs aren't similarly affected, but they spend less time in 'travel' mode. They all drop at the same rate (Gravity: It's not just a theory, IT'S THE LAW!) but again, PBs spend less time getting from point A to point B so they don't fall the same vertical distance over the same horizontal distance. But if you have a stable shooting location, and a known range and you're zeroed on your target, airguns are very repeatable. It's just physics. There are shooters putting pellets into 1-2" groups repeatably at 100-200 yards. I watched a video of a guy hitting 3-5" groups at 600yards with an airgun. You might benefit from watching this video to get an idea of what is readily available without heavy modifications:

For the record, I don't shoot that distance, NOT EVEN CLOSE to that distance, nor do I think I could shoot that distance. I'm just saying it has been done. I think 100 yards is easily doable. I could probably do that with some practice. 200 yards would be tough in my opinion. I've also never fired anything bigger than a .25, so I'm sure others with more experience and knowledge than me can offer more valuable advice.

The Slayer is really quiet for the power, and it has plenty power for a 100 yards shot.

than again I had hogs coming in 5 minutes after I shot other hogs with airguns, loud airguns like the .357 Career ULTRA,
seems that the noise made by big bores airguns will not prevent hogs from coming in.

Check us out at Extreme Big Bore Air rifles we have a .408 that we can thread the end of the barrel for a LDC and it makes it quiet and can produce 475 to 500 FPE with a 275 grain slug and 100 yard shots breaking the front shoulders. I have taken many deer at 75 to 100 yards with this combination and trust me they don't go far if anywhere.

I know first hand that the .357 Slayer can reach out to 200 + yards.

I also know that it is relatively quiet for a very powerful PCP. It is not necessary to wear hearing protection when shooting it.

I was fortunate enough to shoot it in KY @ the GTA funshoot.

On Sunday of the shoot, targets were were set up @ 208 yards.

We were shooting from a folding table with the Slayer on a BiPod. After several attempts I was able to tag one of the targets.

Based on my experience @ the GTA funshoot my pick would be the .357 Slayer.

Just make the can big enough and you have no problems. This one is a 220 fpe gun and the muzzle blast and bullet hitting the target at 150-200M are about similar in noise level as observed by shooter:

When I had my Extreme Big Bore Hunter built I coordinated the threading on the end of the barrel to match the threading that Neil Clague uses on his air strippers. It cuts the sound in half. I can shoot it without ear protection. And it's fun to hear the steel get whacked. An added advantage is that this rifle is usually more accurate with the air stripper on. I think the weight of it dampens barrel harmonics. For example, a couple of days ago at 300 yards I ran 3 consecutive 10 shot groups with a 154 gr. bullet (.30 cal.). With the air stripper off the 3 - 10 shot group average was 10" inches. With the air stripper on the 3 - 10 shot group average was 8" inches.

I've always been concerned about the legal grey area of devices on big bore airguns. My understanding is that the ones used on airguns should be made in such a way that they are destroyed on a PB. But the big bores are shooting lead at speeds nearly even to muzzleloaders, so will these devices fail on a PB?

Only reason I can think of to shoot hogs at over 100yds a night is doing it from an existing stand to a feeder they are used to coming to.
I would put up a second stand down wind of the trail they come in on at 20-50yds to the feeder. Being a bow hunter I use stands/blinds 15-20yds from trails or feeders all the time. As long as you are quiet and careful of your scent, plenty of close shots
