For you folks who are on FB and can view this short video, is it typical for HW rifles to have this much buzz?

You captured the sound I had on my hw95 perfectly. It drove me crazy. After a1000 shots it was still there so I put in spring kit.
I notice though that it had a liner and wonder if just removing that would have eliminated the awful buzz.

I didn't capture the sound, I just found the video on the HW77 site on FB. That twang would drive me FOOLISH! Anxious to hear other HW users replies. None of my Dianas ever had any twang to speak of before they settled in. I've been eyeing an HW30 for a while, but if that buzz is to be expected out of the box, I think I would rethink my plans. All the spring guns I've ever bought, new or used, had some main spring twang. Including RWSs. I wouldn't let something like a noise that can be easily, inexpensively remedied dissuade my buying a higher overall quality item.

take a gallon milk jug and make a sleeve for the spring that and a little molly or sylicone grease or better yet Kroytox #226

Wow, that one is pretty egregious. Closest I've heard to that recently was a Walther LGV Challenger in the plastic stock (wood was dead-quiet). No new HW's I've tried recently have had such twang. I've had two new HW30s and one R7 (now) in my possession that don't have it. Frankly, I'd be shocked if you found a post with a twangy 30/R7. They're just sweetness, all-around, LOL

This answer is gonna draw some criticism, but I am just gonna come out and say it: heavy spring tar. You stand about a 50-50 chance of getting some spring noise in any model of spring gun, even the tx200 sometimes comes with some spring noise. Tar is not the devil I used to think it was, and even with custom fitted spring guides, most tuners use a dab of at least some velocity tar. Air Rifle Headquarters sells spring tar and it is tops. It only takes a smear. I bought my first small container of it before I even joined GTA and that was a few years ago. I went through the no tar phase and now I'm back, lol. Unless you are going to be shooting in sub-zero temps, I wouldn't even worry about the weather. I have shot many springers with and without tar.

Yep....quite normal for my HW springers till fitted with tight spring guides! How is your accuracy? Even in "factory twang mode" my HW77k and R9s would shoot CPLs within 3/8" ctc at 30 yards straight from the box after a bore clean and a few dozen "fouling shots".

While annoying I didn't find that the twang affected accuracy all that much! Many years ag when I first started shooting field target my brother and I were squadded with a really good offhand shooter to learn the ropes. The mentor had an old HW77 with duct taped on cheek rest, duck taped on forearm riser, a home made set back trigger where he cut off the blade of the Rekord trigger and attached a bent piece of aluminum with a screw. That gun would twang like a West Virginia screen door spring yet his match scores shooting standing class would have placed him in well in the open class scores. My brother commented on the twang and the shooter replied "well....yep, guess it could use a tune but it shoots so good I don't want to mess with it"

LOL....at the end of the match our mentor critiqued my brother and I saying "I was supposed to show you how to shoot offhand but it looks lie you already know HOW to shoot, but you just don't shoot too good...yuck yuck har de har har" Anywhoo.......I still don't shoot the forced offhand lanes too well even though my home tuned R9 is twang and vibration free.

Have not noticed a downside to using any of JM's parts or lubes. Virtually every springer (50+) I have disassembled and cleaned/relubed or kitted/tuned since long (30+ years) ago ('cept maybe 3 or 4) has been reassembled with JM tar on the spring. These shoot full power, not held back any by the thick black stuff. Still have what probably is a lifetime supply of it and the next springer I work on will get it too.

Very interesting! At a couple DIFTA field target matches a shooter used his high zoot FWB300 match rifle and I was surprised by the audible twang of even that gun!

Mine twangs terrible but the cocking smoothed out like oil on glass after 100 shots or so. The twang hasn't gone away. Still on the wall as far as putting a tune kit in it, which I did with my other spring rifles.

I'm more annoyed at the trigger. I just can't seem to get it where I like it and I was able to do this easily with my air arms triggers. I just probably need to work on it more. I eliminated the creep but the pull is too heavy even when the trigger weight adjustment was lowered.

Haven't used "tar" for years. While it's an excellent real tacky metal to metal lube I found that if enough were used to kill spring twang the application was also enough to make the gun "temperature sensitive" if the temp during a shooting session varied by 30 degrees. I believe that this is due to the viscosity of the "petro based carrier" changing with temp, and this in turn changes the poi. I still have an old tub of Heavy Tar and it's really gotten tacky over the years as the carrier has outgassed..........

Anywhoo.....as long as there isn't an issue with the staining black color and messiness of the stuff I have fouind that it's an excellent lube for barrel pivot bolts, & latching detents but don't even try using it for a piston/piston seal lube since it's real "gummy". For the last few years I've migrated to Dupont Krytox for my R9 lubing and "forever" I've nixed using some sort of goop to kill twang caused by loose fitting factory spring guides preferring to actually cut tight fitting guides!

Interesting replies, and thanks for them all. Was just curious as Weihrauch is touted as pretty close to "top of the line" in springers. I'm SURE I will eventually end up with one. Right now just getting a solid "thunk" with NO twang out of my two unopened Diana 34s.

There is a lot more to consider in a difference of overall 'quality' than a bit of spring noise. If you are familiar with mechanical principals and have ever been exposed to any well made machinery, try to make a side by side comparison visual inspection of these two models/brands. There is a reason one costs more than the other. And it ain't just 'marketing'.

I usually agree with Ed in regards to twang. It usually doesn't affect accuracy so leave it alone and shoot it till it smooths out......until I shot Steve's 95 after he put 1,000 rounds through.
That rifle twanged and buzzed so badly we couldn't even zero the scope.
Vortek kitted and she is super smooth now!!

No twang in Diana rifles???
I have a 56, top of the Diana line, that thing buzzes so bad it's hard to find the correct adjective to describe it...

Sounds about like the 95 I have. Doesn't seems to effect accuracy in any way, it's a tack driver. It has gotten a little quieter after a tin of pellets though. Told myself I wasn't going to touch it until after 2500.

The R11 I have had some buzz new, not as much, but still annoying. I put a vortek kit in that one...and love it!

My pair of Diana 34s had a MINUTE amount of twang when new, but have settled in to a solid thump now with zero twang. There is absolutely no way I could deal with the twang thing. Would be a shame to HAVE to open up a new high end gun to tame the twang. Probably end up buying a used 30 that has already been kitted. Thanks again for all the replies.
