Quick scope question.

I bought my son a UTG fixed 4x scope for his airsoft rifle. I told him to leave it be until I had to mount it, as I know from his last scope that the gun shoots way off and some modifications to the rings would be in order. Unfortunately, he tried to mount it himself and cranked the wind-age and elevation all over the place. I'm used to re-centering a scope using a mirror, but the front of this scope is angled downward and not flat. Tried holding it up to the mirror, but it's not gonna work.
We decided to use that scope on the RWS 34 we share. It's got some droop to it so I want the scope centered so I can see what my starting point is.
I've heard that you can crank the wind-age and elevation in one direction till they stop, then count clicks the other way till it stops, then set it half way in between and it'll be centered. Is this true? I don't want to start twisting away and ruin the scope.
Thanks,
Ron.

Crank it toward the spring, left and then down, one axis at a time. Don't hard stop it, just 'til it stops. Then count turns 'til it stops in the other direction. Go back the other way half-way. Then do the other axis. It should be pretty close.

Allrighty. I found that it's about 412 clicks max. I set both at 206 and should be close enough.
Thanks!
Ron.

Pardon this question.
Should the elevation turret have the same count as the left to right turret?

Rod, some scopes do, some don't. That's why you do both separately. I have one that has over 7 turns on one and 6 on the other, others have the same.

I recently got a scope too, and the mirror technique wasn't working for me, not enough light was available to see anything or make any adjustments. I tried the proper method of placing the scope in a mechanism which would allow me to rotate it freely while focusing on a small target, to see if the center of the crosshairs would move off target when rotated. The center did move way off, so I started to adjust windage and elevation, but it was taking really long and I wasn't able to get the crosshairs centered any closer.
So I cranked the windage and elevations all the way down (didn't force the knobs to damage the spring or inner tube), and counted the number of turns to the other end of its range. I turned the windage and elevation knobs to roughly center of their range, counting turns as I went.
I then tried the rotating of the crosshair center again, and I was on target. i placed the center of the crosshairs on a dot at about five yards, and when I rotated left and right the center barely moved off of the bullseye. So it works, my scope is now fairly optically centered. The dot was fairly small, maybe 1/6 of an inch, so I know that I will still be centered on a larger target at longer ranges.
