need input on purchases..... airgunners and fisherman

today, the snow storm not only shut down school, it also shut down my chances of going to walmart and dicks sporting goods, i have about $40 to spare and $20 of it is going towards a new medium action rod and reel combo so i can do some bass fishing.
so that leaves $20 for fishing lures and pellets so i can reduce the frequency of starling and crow fly offs. so heres what i need
small plastic lures for crappie
one of the least expensive, realistic looking crankbaits for springtime largemouth.
double rigged bass worm.
panfish minnows or minnow tubes
and finally, cheap, hollow pointed pellets.
i need this to have some replys before i leave for the stores.
P.S: i getting the eagle claw water eagle for a rod/reel combo.

I'd just get some hooks, lead bullets and some jelly worms, maybe twister tails, purple and motor-oil color work well for me. As far as the other crank-baits and spinner-baits go, never had much better luck with them. Someone once told me that if you want to sell lures, don't design them to catch fish, design them to catch fishermen!

ive caught some fish on crankbaits and have confidence that they work.
my worm-and-hook friend saw me use a spoon for trout and said "thats not gonna work". 5 12-13 inch rainbow trout later, he switched to spinners and he caught some 10-11 fish.

The only thing that you need for spawn/post spawn smallies is a chartruse or white twister jig bounced through their spawn beds. As the spawn tapers off, start moving towards deeper water with the same jig. Maybe a flashy Shad Rap to mixthings up.

Got any old .22 wadcutters, even those recovered? Now, this ain't ecologically friendly, but you can cut the skirt to make a dandy pinch shot sinker, the kind the don't sell anymore.
Do a Google on how to snell a hook. Lots cheaper than buying them ready made. All you will need are hooks and a small spool of cheap line.
Most importantly, get a fishing license. A co-worker was up at the Great Falls on the Potomac fishing on the Virginia side. After a while, he sees a ranger coming along, so he reels in and puts his gear away quickly. The ranger asks to see his license and he replies gee, you need a license? Yes, says the ranger, you can't fish without one. You haven't been fishing, have you? He replies, not yet, just started. The ranger than points across the gorge to the rocks on the Maryland side and says see that man waaaay over there? My friend says Yeah, there IS a guy there. Looks no bigger than a speck! Well, says the other, that there is a Maryland park ranger with a pair of binoculars and he's been watching you fish for half an hour. Buddy told me he was fined fifty dollar plus lost all of his brand new gear. License money is well spent since much of it goes right back into the sport.

Shakey head for bass, road runner for crappie. The "Gulp Alive Minnows" have worked well for me. For crankbaits in the spring I have had good luck with ones that dive to 10 -15 feet. It helps if you know the thermocline where your fishing though, and it varies throughout the year making it a little rougher. If they're in spawn throw anything in front of them.

Good for you, you know the law. Enjoy the spring. Lots of those starved fish fattening up and guarding nests. Don't forget to pack some cloth wipes. They are good for more than wiping the stink off your hands. If you run out of bait or lose too many lures, tear a little triangle and place it on a bare hook. Got to be quick because they'll spit it out, but sun fish are pure suckers for it.
And catch-and-release where and when you can. Still fun and, if you pinch the barb down, very challenging to play a fish.

this about as simple as cutting a strip of tin can, wrapping it around the shank of the hook, and cutting it into a oval shape. by itself it works well, but even better when you put a berkley gulp alive! on it!
i will try to post how to do it tommarow.

For crappie i would go with a 1 in white grub on a jig head. I would kill crappy and smaller bass with those. And a white crankbait or rattle trap. I have about 20 3700 tackle boxs full and 2 tackle bags filled to the brim and that's just the lures. I have every color under the sun but always come back to plain white when things get tough. A white 3/8 oz tandom willow leaf spinner bait is good also. Good luck!

question: how would i fish a grub on a jighead? can i use a small rattle trap? how do i fish it? what color?
i had dropped a lincoln on a rattle trap last summer. but i got it caught up in the tuscarawas waterfall and lost it all on the same day.

I second that!! very versatile, I do well with a white
curly tail grub on them I would get 1/4 oz
they are fine for both crappie and bass

For crappie, I fish a jig head and grub or tube. Put a split-shot about 6" above jig. I work it around boat docks or out on the open lake, we look for submerged brush or mats that have been put out to attract them. I use a white jig head with a red eye or a chartreuse with red eye. I use a two tone tube of chartreuse/red and chartreuse/black. And for live bait, use minnows.
You can use Roadrunners and small spinner baits too. There are also ultralight crankbaits for crappie, but I have the best luck with the tube setup above.
As far as bass, you need some worm rigs. Also a topwater popper/chugger works great early morning or late in the afternoon, especially Spring and Fall. I use plastic lizards or worms and keep at least one rig ready with these. Depending on the depth, water clarity and water temperature, I also like to use crankbaits like the Rattle Trap. For deeper waters I use a deep diving crank bait. Sometimes a jig and pig or worm trailer. But is the fish are turned on, they can be caught on just about anything.
I also design and build my own spinner & buzz baits.
When I go out on the lake, my wife laughs at me. I carry at least 6 rod & reel combos set up with different lures. I cover from topwater down to bottom bumping. ONE of my tackle boxes weighs about 50lbs and I ALWAYS have 3-4 Wal-Mart plastic bag "tackle boxes" too. LOL
You just never know WHAT you are gonna need. But for sure I need a back brace or a couple of sherpas. HeeHee
Jonny, send me a pm with your address and I'll drop you some of my favorite stuff for crappie and bass.
Happy Fishing & Shooting!!!!
Dave
