RF, you touched on something that is a personal pet peeve of mine, that being some people's inability to moderate their language around polite company or strangers.
Lots of guys in an all male industrial environment will use plenty of salty language, but all too many of them can't seem to figure out how to switch that off around others not in said environment.
This is particularly offensive around kids or elderly.
In fact, I finally gave up in disgust with a certain couple my late wife and I used to hang out with because of the foul language and racial slurs that they were unable or unwilling to shut off once I had a youngster of my own.
Enough was enough at that point.

Sadly, it's all too pervasive today, and I'm just as guilty at times as the rest. Turn on the T.V. and check out the cable channels. They say things that used to get your butt whipped if you even thought them. The movies think it's cute to have a little kid cut loose with a blue streak that would have caused a Marine to blush. I remember watching a kid's movie when the children were young and a character said something about shooting a missle up someone's a**, totally inappropriate to a film like that, not to mention totally unnecessary unless it was to garner a PG-13 rating. Not one more bad word in the flick. The other day I checked out the cable show "Spartacus" on HBO, etc, and it should have been called "Sparta-cuss" there was so much profanity. Every other word. I thought maybe the screen writer's word processor had a glitch in it or something. Was so stupid I couldn't get into the show. Our world today. Not getting old, just disgusted.

"Speaking as if mother..." to you means don't use bad names, insulting language; I interpreted it to mean "do what mom says,,,or dad says" submitting to an elders guidance because I'm not smart enough to make my own decisions. The use of foul language didn't even enter my mind of what you were meaning.
"Don't use bad names or insulting language" to me is a lot clearer than a probably regional expression like "...mother..." "...church..."
As far as Holy Books and religions: I believe that when religions and their Holy books becomes a source of disunity (which clearly in my mind has already happened in our global community) then it is better to have no religion at all.
I used to be religious and spout slogans of peace and it does 'sound good', but when centuries and centuries of wars on this planet have happened, mostly in the name of God (of the various names of God) and there still is no real difference in humanity - and I don't see any possible changes in my lifetime; I've concluded that I am not a sheep in need of a good shepherd. Religion IS the opiate of the masses.
Revolution is the only way I see that makes any real changes. That is how this country was started.
All these wars and fighting and squabbling, being a naturist, this is simply the pecking order of life. We humans like to think we are above animal's nature but I beg to differ. There is a hierarchy to all of life and there always will be,,the pecking order is part of our genetic make up.
