I got another bolt from Mike..mine was bent and when swapping things somehow lost that little spring that goes in front of the ball for the bolt detente. Is that thing really necessary?? I cant see how not having it would cause any problems. The bolt is obviously a bit looser but once the pellet is loaded the bolt is locked into place.
Thanx...Dan

Would agree the "DETENT" aspect it does is pretty minimal at best.

Ya know .... If you place a small section of o-ring cord cut from an @ correct size o-ring behind ball and then place screw lightly compressing it, likely work just as well

Doesn't do anything that stops the functioning of the rifle, just gets the slop out and keeps the bolt from rotating. Know I scrounged around in my junk box and came up with a spring that could be shortened and work (possibly one from a Crosman 2240 safety detent, but once a part hits the junk box, its origin is lost). Guess the important part of that is that it's evidently not some unique size, just real short.
IF you replace it, might consider slightly deepening the little recess on the bolt...makes for a firmer detent and gives the too short spring a little more room before getting coil bound.

Think BIC lighter. Haven't bought flint for my striker in decades. no need to buy springs or detent balls from crosman. Detent balls can be bought cheaper from knife building supply places online. I bought 30 the other day for $6.00.

On my 177 B50, if that detent was adjusted too loose, the bolt would rotate towards open and slightly open on each shot - even when fully down when I made the shot. For that session, I had to hold it down with my thumb while shooting.
It may be an individual thing with each gun, but that is how mine worked. With the adjustment snug, it works as it should and stays closed.
I like the suggestion of using a short length of o-ring. That should work just fine.

Airgun motivation: pest elimination, target shooting, super tuning, accurate long-distance shots

I thought I had the old zippo style lighter here with the spring for the flint but could'nt find it. I did a search for zippo lighter spring and read where those small springs can be found at a locksmith as they are used in standard pin-tumbler locks!
