My brother had a minty one gifted him several years back and I just helped him sight it in. Most likely purchased around 1980, I doubt it's had a tin fired through it. Cocks easy and no twang on shooting. Probably could use some lube on the spring and piston but because I've never owned a springer I'm clueless there. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
He is near Tacoma WA so perhaps there is an airgun specialty shop nearby to help get him up to speed.

If you're going to open it up i'd put a Maccari spring-seal -lube kit in it. GTA member Scott(Motorhead) or David Slade(Airgunwerks) could fix you up.

Yea, shot or stored those original FWB piston seals are generally toast after 25-30 years.
No problem shooting gun as is ... just pay attention to pellet speed and sound action makes when firing.
Pellets slow up or action gets harsh ... STOP and get rifle serviced ASAP.

Thanks fellas - The rifle is shooting smooth but there is no chronograph here so the performance is in question. It is a college graduation gathering and the misses put away the rifle. I would have smacked some tin cans to check penetration otherwise. I am going to make my brother a boxed rubber mulch pellet trap like I have back in MN so he is able to shoot more. Well, it's off to the Tacoma Dome we go for some pomp and circumstance!

If you do want to tear your 124 down, here's a great site to help you. If the links don't work, I'll try something else. I have the same rifle and put the JM kit in it, and I couldn't be more satisfied.
