BSA 6-24x44 or UTG 3-12x44 Full Size

Hi all,
  Just got an AT44-10W long .22 cal. I'm interested in those two scopes. One thing that scares me about the BSA is the magnification.
  Most of my pest shooting is in low light/dark (porch light) conditions from maybe 15 to 30/40 yards. Is 6-24 too much? How are they for close up shots?
  Low light vision is very important, that's why I'm looking at 30mm tubes and 44mm lenses. Is either one of these better in the dark?

I have a theory which I could be wrong (just ask my wife). I shoot with all my scopes set to 12 mag. My theory is if your max mag is 12 you might be a bit blurry, but if 12 mag is 1/2 to 3/4 max it seems the scopes have more clarity. Like I said I could be wrong, just ask my wife.

The BSA has good glass but I own the UTG, it is very well built ,has never let me down, has better #`s for what you want to do,  and would be the one to come with me to a deserted island ,. Give it a try and if not satisfied maybe your dealer will take it back for exchange..

I was the same as you but instead of a UTG 3-12 it was a 4-16, and guess what it was also for an AT44W-10! At the end I choose the BSA tactical 6-24x44, it is cheaper (if it's your first buy you get 15$ off in midwayusa), weights less and the glass is really good (it works really nice in low light situations also). The SF is also super accurate and the mil-dot reticle is really nice,  however I don't like that it has 4 mil dots instead of 6 or 9 like the UTG, the illuminated reticle adds weight to the scope and in most situations is useless, I'll admit it would be fun to play with 36 colors.

PS: If you have the long AT you may want to Detune it to 30fpe, still plenty of energy for most critters and you would get a lot of shots out of that 230cc tank.

just use the lower X's at night , use the higher powers during the day if you want a closer look . make sure you get something that will focus to your minimum shooting distance .

killer prices on the endurance and sidewinder series too .

if the BSA you're referring to is the midway special , i've read nothing but great comments about it . the deciding factor between it and the varmint for me was i really wanted the option to use it on a springer .

had the UTG 4-16x44 with the swat wheel . nice scope . noticeably heavier (but not a big issue for me) than the varmint and their clarity seem very similar to me with a slight nod to the varmint . i wanted more X , i'm one of them aim small miss small folks . BTW .... the IR was just useless bulk for my purposes .

BSA is very good in low light.. Even clear on full mag, which I was surprised about.. For the money it's awesome.. Only bettered by my SWFA.. No better side focus at $129 at midway when on sale..

Wow, this is harder than picking a gun. They both have their good points.
If I got something else later, I couldn't put the BSA on my Gamo Silent Cat springer.
 So you think 6X is not too strong at 15 yds.
Pretty sure I don't need 36 colors, but the lighted reticle seems helpful. I don't have the best eyesight.
Is there a focus wheel for the BSA? Seems like it could be helpful, being a righty.
It appears the mounts that come with either scope should fit an AT44, correct?
I don't have a computer, I'm working right now (sort of). I'll go to the library tonight and search Youtube to see if I can get a better look at these.

If I got something else later, I couldn't put the BSA on my Gamo Silent Cat springer.
 So you think 6X is not too strong at 15 yds.

I am sure there is a wheel that will fit the bsa SF but I don't feel like it needa one, it is very smooth and accurate in rainging the distance.

I use the monts that the scope with and have no problems and I like that they are weaver, also the Hawke scope is great but it doesn't have a etched reticle, I am not sure if it will affect but the bsa mil dot is amazing.

I have taken shots at doves as close as 10yards and I used the 6X and was clear enough, however for target shooting I think the minimum distance to focus is 15yards.

Also why would you get something else later for the AT? The bsa scope is a keeper IMO.

the midway special BSA 6-24x50 is not springer rated .

I don't think that particular BSA will hold up on a springer.. only PCP, or PB.. Not spring rifle rated if I remember right..

I have exactly a fifteen yard shoot to My rat bait station, and 6X  works great.. I'm using a couple $1 solar walkway lights with red film on them to light it all up.....

I have both the UTG and BSA scopes and for putting on a PCP rifle, I would take the BSA 10 times over.  Fantastic glass, far better than the UTG, fine etched reticle, and more magnification.  The only reason to pick the UTG is for springer use.  It's built like a tank.

Well, I placed my order before I left work Friday. Don't have a computer so that's my online access.
Ordered the UTG 3-12x44 (and 4 tins of JSB pellets, which I gather from this forum is the preferred lead, 15.89 and 18.13 grains.)
Will see... If I don't love it, the Gamo gets a better scope. I'm actually very impressed by the quality and performance of that gun, it deserves a better scope.
