R10 with R11 barrel?
«

Like the title says. I have an old Beeman R10 in .20 and really like it. But I would like to switch to either a .177 or .22 so i can have more pellet options. I mainly want to shoot lead free because a California condor just moved into my area and don't want to be responsible for poisoning him. I caught him eating a dead possum in my backyard. With money tight these days I looked into just getting a new barrel instead of buying a whole new rifle. Has anybody put an R11 barrel on a R10 or R9? I'm curious how the extra barrel weight would affect how the rifle shoots.

Well they say the lead bullets in the dead animals people shoot get eaten by the condors. I like shooting rats and rabbits maybe even some crows. I know I'm not gonna eat them so might as well let the buzzards have'em. Either way anybody try a barrel swap off an R11? Any advantages?

Yep...R11 barrel goes right onto the R9. The only semi-difficult part of the swap is removing the cocking arm pivot pin. You can either drill it out, or just drive it out with a chain-breaker. Either way, when you order the R11 barrel get a couple replacement pins. There are posts here showing how to re-flare the new pin using ball bearings.
My barrel swap was not typical, as I was going from a 19.5" end-weighted FT barrel to the R11 barrel. The R11 barrel is heavy though...just the way it's supposed to be.
I think you'll be happy with the change. I know I sure was. (bottom rifle in pic)

That actually looks really cool with the sleeved barrel. Now I'm even more excited to do the swap. The pin your talking about, is it the the "cocking lever rivet"? Just wanted to order the right part.

You might be money ahead to sell that old R-10 and put the money toward an R9 in .177 or .22. You can get a Weihrauch HW95 (same as an R9) from AoA on sale for $299, right now.

Oh man, I don't really think I wanna sell my rifle. I like how it's just a little different then all the R9's out there. I love the deluxe stock on it and had it tuned by Mac1 with the PG2 kit installed. I'm shooting about 830fps with 11.4gn beeman trophies. So I was thinking of swapping in the .22 barrel and seeing how the FTT's at 9.56gn or the RWS hyperdome at 10.96gn fair in it.

I still think you would be better off buying an HW95 from AoA right now on sale for $295. A new barrel will cost around $150 (? not sure). $150 more and you can get a whole new rifle in a new caliber you want. Just a thought and I know your budget is what your budget is.

Question: have you found a source for the R11 barrels? (make sure if you're looking at Pyramyd that it's not just the sleeve).
Since Specialty Shooting was prohibited from selling to the US market I've been unable to find anyone else who stocks the sleeved barrels.

Let me get this straight. You are worried about protecting a condor from eating pellets left in all the dead animals you killed?
California logic at work right there.

I didn't know straight shooter's stopped shipping to the US. I might just have to order a regular R9 barrel. Are the sleeves hard to install? And i did look into getting a new R9 but then i would also have to factor in the cost of a new PG2 kit and have it tuned again to have it like my R10. 22 barrels are about $100 and the cocking lever rivot is like $5 so it seems that just swapping the barrel is still the better option

Not Straight Shooters (they're a US company), but Specialty Shooting Supplies (the Canadian company). Specialty Shooting has a huge inventory of HW parts, and their prices were outstanding. For example, I believe I paid $125 US for the R11 barrel, which came complete with sleeved barrel, pivot bushings, and breech seal.
When an American distributor complained to HW about the competition, HW mandated that SSS can no longer sell to the US market.
I could get into it further (because it really pi$$es me off), but there are already mile-long threads on the subject and apparently HW isn't going to reverse their decision despite it's negative effect on their customers.

Anybody ever put the longer R1 barrel on an R9? Just wondering if there would be any benefits to that? Or just out of curiosity where would I get a custom shrouded barrel and how much are they?

Managed to find an R11 barrel in .20 that someone never used and was willing to sell. I know I said I wanted one in .22 but I guess that's not happening right now. So I swapped it in and I really like how it looks on my R10. It does add a little weight to the gun but no big deal for taking out hunting all day. I noticed the pellets I tried with it so far have slipped into the barrel a little easier, like if the R11 barrel is a little looser than the R10. With the Beeman FTS pellets the head slips right in and the skirt fits snug. With the old barrel I would have to push the head in. So far it seems to be grouping better. Not sure if it's due to the way the pellets fit or the extra weight on the barrel. The extra weight does seem to make the rifle more stable when firing. So far I'm very happy with the swap.
