Why can I hit a pez candy but not a bullseye

After I shot the 50' match today, I was playing around with my HW30s. There were some twigs poking out of the snow, I could reliably hit them. I set up some Pez candies on a sawhorse, hit those 9x/10. Then I went back to target bulls and I couldn't put one in the center. All around it, yes, but not dead center. I went back and forth for a bit, hit a pez, hit a target, pez, target, twig, target...

Seems like I should be able to get a better score target shooting... Is it because the black area I'm aiming at is so much bigger?

Any ideas why this happens?

hay dont feel bad i have the same problem and i chalk it up to the fun factor paper is not that fun to shoot at but i love shooting thing like asprine, pez, match heads, split playing cards, thumb tacks paint balls (there to big and easy to hit but fun to watch explode) i can usually hit these items and not get bulls that often. one thing i have done and it helped a little though was change up the color of my targets on my computer for instance i'll make the bull white so it contrasts the sights or crosshairs and then change the rest of the target to red or light green or blue that you can still see were the pellets hit the target have fun

Your problem is concentration !

When your shooting for the Pez, your shooting the whole Pez, and you hit !

And when your shooting for the small target, your aiming at the whole target ! Now concentrate on the white dot, and see the improvement !

Because the paper is bigger than the pez.  Think about, and focus on one part of the paper.  Put a dot, a something in one part so that all you are thinking of is that part, instead of the whole target

Great advice -- though I thought I WAS concentrating! LOL!

I'll try again in the next couple of days  -- this time really focusing on the precise spot I want to hit. I may try some dot targets from that target generator I posted about last night.

Some people have trouble centering a black crosshair on a black target, and that "might" be part of the problem.  As was mentioned try printing a target with a white center, or use one of those bright stick on target dots.

BTW if your shots are all "around" the center in a circle, with no shots in the center, then I think it is a problem with your technique.  You are pulling the trigger when the crosshair is on the center of the target, then by the time the shot is released and pellet is on its way, the rifle has drifted off the center of the target.  At least that is how it is when shooting off-hand.

Pick the X. Pick the smallest spot you can find. Everything else about the target is of no concern. 7+ yrs of regional PB Benchrest shooting has taught me this. Pick your spot, breathe and shoot. It's all about the concentration. And above all, RELAX! Relax your grip, relax your trigger finger and relax your mind. Let your gun do what it wants to do.

P.S. No Mountain Dew, Coffee or RedBull !!

the paper tells all. even thou you hit the pez doesn't mean you hit it in the absolute center. it's dust and gone but that paper remains to show you are all over your bulls eye just not dead center. you might be clipping those pez with edge of pellet. great shot no doubt but not absolute dead center. shooting paper drives you to seek perfection. most importantly is try and do the exact same routine every shot every time. practice breathing, and just practice, practice, practice. Try printing multiple targets on paper and taking one shot at each bull not grouping. Yea its easier said than done no doubt but a good reason to shoot.
