Hello, I'm a bit new here and I've been testing my old R7 quite a bit. I'm shooting a Leupold Rimfire special with a fine duplex and I believe the parallax is set to 60 yds. Because of the low power, I don't think the parallax is costing me that much in group size.

Anyway, the gun will often print 3-shot groups of .25" ctc at 20 yds. A serious scope would help a bit but not that much because the little Leupold is fine and clear. My question is, should an R7 do much better than this? I've heard of 1/8" at 25 yds. No way will mine do that.
Thanks for any insight. If my accuracy is low, I may shop for a new R7 since I've tried all the best pellets already.

Did you try the JSB 7.33 , 7.9 and 8.44? Most Ag's will yield excellent results with one or two of the three. Might give the barrel a quick cleaning too.
And yes you can shoot tighter groups at twenty yards if you have the right setup ...pellets ,optics and technique. I would say you are on the path and just keep on practicing..... your R7 is doing fine.

Pardon me, I over spoke a bit there. The pellets I tried were Beeman FTS, Exact Diablos, and Crossman Premier domed. From my web browsing, I figured that it should shoot one of those three. I just don't have confidence in my barrel since its an old Santa Rosa with questionable barrel care. I've thought about trying my Leupold 3x9EFR which I have on a super accurate rimfire or a 24X sightron which currently resides on a 6mm BR but I hate to subject these wonderful scopes to the mechanical battering.

The Jsb's consistently yield the best results for the R7/30s...... even still you're doing good.... just clean the barrel and try some of the 7.33.. I think you'll be pleased.

BTW= Some will say try the AA Falcons 7.33 === They are jsb, Just not as clean and cost more.

in answer to your question ,more than likely no. Thats about as good as it or any great air gun will shoot. My gosh at 50 yds that would be 5/8" . The gun is shooting to the best of your ability . Could it do better . Maybe but not a heck of a lot better. Thats great shooting!!!

cvasquez is quite right. If you're shooting 0.25" CTC groups at 20 yards, you and your gun are doing just fine. On the internet it's very easy for people to boast of exceptionally small groups, such as 1/8" at 20 yards with an R7 (HW30), but they are usually just making empty claims.

I"m starting to think that that is all I'm good for with a springer anyway. Consistent follow-through is too difficult with that strange recoil.

I went back and edited my post to say "often" rather than consistent to make sure that I'm not carried away with optimism (easy to do in this business). The previous post inspired some caution n me. I think that to claim "consistent" simply is saying too much.

Having said that, I think the general idea of my post remains. If my gun "often" shoots .25" at 20 yds, this does not mean that it will "often" shoot .125" group at 20 yds, but rather seldom, almost never, etc. From my experience with accurate powder guns, once you reach a certain point, subsequent gains are difficult and halving is well nigh impossible.

Air guns are humbling. I thought my gun was shooting pretty good but I had trouble hitting 2" water balloons at 45 yds with just a slight breeze.

Welcome to your new love/hate relationship with springers. Master them and that heavy varmint class, or whatever you compete in, will seem easier than before. In all seriousness , I think spring gun practice really shines a light on repeatability of good form and the importance of a good trigger. I agree with what you said about follow through, but shoot boingers for a while and you will notice a long follow through next time you fire a PB.

Maddening though isn't it?...

Nothing wrong with those groups, but, yes, try different pellets for sure. Mostly just keep working with the gun.

I've been shooting an HW30S all winter. Being as light as it is, it's much more hold sensitive than my other springers. Took me awhile to develop a hold it likes, but now that I have, it's become my favorite AG. Have logged more shooting hours with it, this winter, than any other gun. I'd be lost without it. It's that kind of gun.

If I did the math right, at 20 yards, 1 minute of angle is about 0.21". Good grief, in whose world is a quarter-inch group at that distance with a springer "bad" accuracy?

I have a lot of airguns I'd trade ya for that junker, LOL...

Oh and for what it's worth, Air Arms Falcons (7.3 gr roundheads made by JSB) are AMAZING in my own old R7. The gun shoots them faster than the famous RWS Hobby, is smooth to the point of nearly recoilless, and is amazingly accurate with them.

I appreciate the comments. I just don't have the experience to know what I should expect. I did have an old Cummins air rifle from China for $20 dollars but we won't talk about that.

This old R7 is not equal to but nevertheless, is in the same category as my CZ 452 22 rimfires which is to say, pretty good.

For some odd reason, tonight, I was suddenly able to remember the BB gun I got as a kid for Christmas. It was a Daisy model 25 pump. I bagged a lot of sparrows with that rig. Do you all remember the thrill when you got your first BB gun? Wow.
