Another P-1

Couldn't resist getting this .20 cal. P-1.  I installed a set of Hogue rubber wrap-around grips.  They felt a bit narrow, and so, I cut a pair of 1/32" thick scales from brick red knife handle spacer material.  That did the trick.  The only drag is the limited selection of suitable pellets, and it won't even group with JSB Exacts.  It does shoot H&N FTTs with precision.  It also likes H&N Match pellets, but they seem to be no longer available in .20.  Bummer.  RC

Nice looking setup.  I like the hint of red in the spacers you used under the grips.

It is fairly easy to change calibers on the P1 isn't it?  I see barrels for sale occasionally.  That might be an option if you choose to do so.

Yes, barrels are available for about $40.  The spacer material I used is available in various colors, and can be found at any knifemaking supply store for a couple of $.  Thanks for the comment.  RC

What scope mount are you using? I ask because there are few choices due to the
14 mm rail width. Thanks.

I use the cantilever BKL mounts because of their self-centering function, and to position the scope for the proper eye relief.  RC

I bought one in .22, and got a .177 barrel from PA for $29.99. I believe they only stocked it a couple months after I called asking about one.

It seems that I read one of your reviews (Amazon?) where you mentioned the .22 being inaccurate - yes, I do my homework before a purchase.  I already have a .177, and so, the best I can hope for is an expansion of the available pellets in .20.  Thankfully, the H&N FTTs shoot very well.  RC

The .22 is just as accurate as the .177, once the gun itself is mastered.  The HW45/P1 is not a forgiving air pistol as it is a springer, complete with all the challenges of shooting a spring piston airgun.

Yes, although I've owned and shot many springer pistols, the P-1 has the steepest learning curve.  An absolutely addictive pistol to shoot, though.  .22 appeals to me since I have many tins of pellet, but my HW50S is the only .22 I own other than my 2240. RC

Well, the p1 was my first decent airgun. I think, in my ignorance, I may have scratched the .22 barrel it came with using a bore snake with the wires in it - or abusing it in other ways. It also constantly dieseled in .22, which I hardly ever see with the .177 barrel. That may be also be my fault - the result storing it upside down - I don't do that anymore either, so it's hard to tell for sure whether the dieseling would be caused by issues in .22, or the storage method. I did write some comments on amazon, at one point.

It would go all the way through an empty can of beans at 20 yards tho!

I also got it on sale at AGD, when it was on an after christmas overstock sale for $369 - pretty good deal!

Grats on your p1, I do hope you enjoy shooting it as much as I do.

I seem to thrive on the challenge to shoot spring pistols well.  I own a couple of SSP pistols which, out of the box and without much of a learning curve, will shoot circles around a P-1 without effort.  Although I don't find them as enjoyable to shoot, they establish the benchmark I aspire to with the P-1.  On a good day I occasionally reach that mark, and that provides the impetus to keep practicing.  For me, the P-1 is an exciting pistol to shoot, and it's unlike any other spring pistols I have owned and shot for accuracy.  I'd say you got a heck of a deal on yours.  RC
