Hey folks!

I am really wanting a HW95. I want the 95 for the iron sights vs. the R9 that doesn't come with irons. I do already have the R9 in .22 and I love it but the .22 was my second choice of caliber when I bought it in 2007. Ever since then I had wished that it was .177.

Well, now, I have decided that I like shooting iron sights and I always wanted the .177 but now that I am "serious" about getting another airgun, I am waffling on the caliber. Over the years I have really warmed up to the .22 with it's easier handling/loading and I like the THUMP at the target. I don't hunt but if I did, I have the .22 R9 already if I felt that I needed the extra pellet weight. My first thought was a no-brainer, get the .177 without question BUT, as I hesitate and think more on it, maybe I want it in .22.

So my question in what caliber? .22 or .177?

I'll answer the usual questions...

I shoot at reactive and paper targets, I don't hunt. If I do need a hunting rig I have the .22 R9 and a .22 powered up QB78.
I don't have an issue with handling the smaller size pellets and I "stock" both calibers since I shoot both already.

As I write this, I think that I have already answered my question but I still want to hear what you guys think.

Sure...Go for the .177 caliber...Allot more wadcutter pellet chooses!

Hw95 luxus in .20 just because!

But, since that wasn't your question, I'd go .177 for paper punching because of trajectory, pellet choices and pellet cost.

I started with a .177 cal R9 and shot it for a couple seasons. Then I drank the bigger pellet iz more gooder coolaid and bought a .20 cal R9. Finding that the .20 cal was no advantage for me but had the disadvantage of a loopier trajectory I bought a .22 cal R1 barrel and had it "chopped and choked> The thinking was that the .22 pellet would work better when a squirrel got hit with it. Well....the .22 cal didn't make up for the more critical hold over "guestimation" past 30 yards. I ended up selling both the .20 and .22 barrels and reverted back to .177 never to look back!

IMHO....at the R9/HW95 power level the .177 cal shines, however, out to 30 yards it didn't make any difference what cal I shot!

At 12 FPE the 95 is real sweet........or if not 12 fpe---- just tame it a little . You'll love it.

I have a 98 in 177 and she is flat out stupendous!!!
Mine has a PG2 kit in it and I just love this rifle to pieces!!
The 95 in 177 will put a silly grin on your face constantly!!
Let us know what you decide and please post pics when the lady arrives!!

I have decided to stick with my original thought and go for the .177 .

Makes sense, right. I don't need two of the same even though they are slightly different.

When I get one I will post some images.

BTW where is a "how to"on posting pics and customizing my settings on the forum here? There is so much you can do, I don't know where to begin! How do I list my airguns at the bottom of my posts like others have?

A list of pellets that perform in mine Brett:
JSB 7.87, 8.4 and 10.3 in 4.52 head.
FTT in 4.51 or 4.52
Barracuda Match
CPLs

All shoot great, but if shooting groups at 50 yards with a bit of a breeze 10.3 are amazing!
No breeze....CPLs.
Had a calm day couple of weeks ago and shot groups at 50 with CPLs.
Had one 1/2" 5 shot group and one a hair over .6"
Extremely accurate rifle and you're gonna love it!!

Hey Joe, how were you shooting those groups? Rested on a bench? That's some pretty tight shooting with a springgun at that distance.

Well done! The groups look so big until you put something up to compare it to like that penny. 5 tiny pellets at 50 yds and all inside a penny or nickel... super! It seems like a lot of guys are stretching their distances out and I seem to be doing the opposite, getting shorter. I am on 2 acres so I can shoot as far as I would want to with an airgun but I seem to be staying at around 25 yds lately. It's just fun. I also have taken the scopes off of my springers and put the iron sights back on except for the R9. I recently bought some steel knock down targets and they have been a blast, literally. I love hearing the pellet hit the steel and watching it go down. I am also back to throwing some empty tin cans out and walking those around the yard. Those are a bigger target yet. My targets are getting bigger and my distances are getting shorter and my fun level it going wAY WAY UP! I may have to set some paper up this weekend and try my hand at some paper punching at 50. I will share it if I get to it, good, bad or ugly!

What a blast!!!
Funniest thing was when someone announced which target they were gonna shoot and watching that target get hit 5 times by other shooters!!!
The main object it to have fun and giggle like a 12 year old!!!

Maybe I should start a new thread but after reading Brett's affinity for iron sights (same here) I was wondering what is the usual max distance for non-scoped rifles?

I would say the biggest determining factor is eye sight. If mine was still 20/20 I would use open sights out to 100 yards , unfortunately for me that was 35_ years ago . I can't even use open sights at 10 yards anymore

I do that too! I set them on golf tees at varying distances and mark them with little orange lawn flags. I love the splat! I have also drilled some holes in a 4x4 to hold the tees with the paintballs on them.

I haven't tried anything of any real precision past 25-30 yds with the iron sights. This trend is fairly new for me. I recently bought a HW35 for a great price and started shooting it with the irons on it. It took so much of the expectation out of shooting tiny holes in a piece of paper that I took the scopes off of my 30 and 77 and started shooting them like that. What I found was that I had to really concentrate on hitting the target with the irons. It made shooting the scoped guns so much easier/steady. I seemed to gain some finer muscle control holding the rifle steady and it has improved my shooting. I am an average shooter but I really noticed the difference pretty quickly. Now I practice shooting off hand a lot more and benched a lot less. It poses a new challenge for me and has made shooting feel fresh again!
