Oh my gosh!
That old boy was huge.
The picture was a bit grainy, but he looked like at least a six by six, and probably every bit of 650-700 lbs on the hoof.
If I were that hunter, I would have redlined my heart rate with him being so close.

Haha that was great.. see how he had to raise his bow to draw? thats a man who didn't do enough off season practice
and is probably considering wearing depends on his next elk hunt.

either thats a dumb elk and didnt scent him or the hunter was well covered and took precaution to be scent free
either way thats a solid hunter there
i had a doe doe it to me like 3 yrs ago i didnt have a doe permit and she was sniffing my broadhead then she cautiosly walked away i was almost going into cardiac arrest lol
and also had a grey fox do it he was withing 10 feet staring at me and finally noticed i was there and ran but at 20 yards i wistled he stopped and i shot but i was shaking so bad i center punched a tree with the arrow the tree was 10 feet to the left of him
lol

WOW! If that were me, the elk would have known I was there by the smell that suddenly appeared.

So, who's the cameraman? Some camouflaged professional from the Discovery Channel? Doesn't it strike you as a bit odd that this elk comes right up on the solitary hunter and someone else just happens to be there to record the event? I don't hunt elk. Are you supposed to have a partner to document everything? Or was this guy related to the fellow who decided to call in a buck by dousing himself with buck lure? (Remember that video?) Just a bit too coincidental.
OTOH, I had a good friend who went moose hunting for the first time and, while sitting and eating an apple, gun across his lap, a young bull walked down the path and right in front of him. Only had time to drop the apple, shoulder the rifle (.375 H&H seated, ouch!) and sight down the barrel since the scope was useless. And he managed to bag it, too.

Stranger things have happened, Red. But I agree, it MIGHT have been set-up. Still, either way it makes a great video. I showed it to my wife and she said, "Wow!" I do like that woman!

Cool video. Don't know if it's staged or not but it's still cool

Staged? Impossible. Have you guys ever watched some of the outdoor TV hunting/fishing programs? There's a camera guy there alright to record every move and emotion. Nowadays it's quite common for a film crew or person to accompany the hunter. Seems there is money to be made in in the hunting video business.Oh Red, you can bet the camera guy was in full camo too.

I think it was real. being an avide hunter and have hunted elk many times as well video several hunts. bull elk in rut are worse than whitetail deer they lose all sense of what is dangerous there is no doubt in my mind that the camera man was also working the cow call which made that event happen. there is more than one video on the net showing bull elk charge into hunters close enough to give them a big wet one on the cheek. never the less my heart could not have taken that event and i applaud the hunter for being able to keep it together for that long.

Well, I suppose it could be real. (Yes, there ARE a plethora of hunting videos, usually with the guy talking sotto voce like they are hunting deaf animals or something..."Here he comes. Look at the size of him... He can't hear us...... Cos I'm in an editing booth overlaying this footage......)
Even so, how come we don't see the end of the show? Who won? My money's on the elk.
(Also applies to golf on TV. Shhhhhh......he's lining up the put. Hush.......there it goes........hold your breath......he might hear us a hundred yards away in the video booth.)
Hey, no wise cracks.

There is nothing like good old mr fudd. i'm sure the elk won that contest for sure as for sound was most likely rookies with a camera hince why he hadn't been full draw before the elk came in not like he couldn't hear him coming at 800 lbs. camera man had no shake to him what so ever the last two hunts i were on had the option for guide to operate video for some extra cash.

Makes you think, don't it? Pay the guide to film you getting racked by that big bull. Hope the guide got his money up front.

have you ever hunted elk?
you call em in like turkeys
my guess is that he was calling the elk and either this one was being quiet and snuck in from the side and he was aimed down toward another vocal bull or this bull was below him at one point and he was calling and it circled and came in from the side
ive had buddys record my hunts befor also just never had a sucessful one yet
some day i will
