It's a combination matter of cheek weld/personal preference/the sort of shooting you do.Low rings are fine, & like Dave said once the mag can clear the scope tube no worries. I have found that low rings are better for shorter range shooting & using flatter shooting ammo. High rings are good for if you do longer range shooting but they can present a challenge wrt cheek weld & eye placement for some people, so they aren't suitable for all guns or for everyone. They are better for longer distance shooting because the center of the reticle cross-hairs are a lot higher than the bore. So for example, you can have say a 75 yard primary zero & a 14 secondary zero, with everything in between those two requiring varying degrees of hold under, & past 80 requiring hold over. Med rings offer a decent compromise between the two.

I like high rings for longer range shooting as well. Just be aware that it makes cant error more pronounced so be sure to use a level.
