Getting a Chrony...

Just not sure what one to get. Is the higher price worth the added features? I was looking at an Alpha master (was going for the master because I really do like the display at the bench next to me.) But at Wal Mart right now, the Beta master is only about 11 dollars more than the Alpha Master. Is the added shot strings needed since I will be writing everything down and putting it on the computer anyway? Or should I say heck with it, it's only 11 bucks more? Anyone have experience with both with some insight?

I don't have a chronometer at all (yet). If you plan to put the numbers into your computer perhaps you should look into a chrony which connects directly to your computer. Some of them do. Check prices at Amazon against Walmart. I think you'll find a better variety.
Caldwell now has a chronograph and theirs will talk to your smartphone. I don't know if that will download to a computer or not. I am finding there is a terrific amount of homework involved in the shopping, though.
I wish you all the luck in the world on your quest. By all means keep us posted on the results.

Hey, Funhouse! I own an Alpha Master shooting chrony, and I love it! It is indeed nice to have the display right on the bench where I am shooting from, and I enter all my numbers into the memo pad on my Galaxy S4 for future reference. I had been shooting airguns for several years before I got my chrony (actually traded a case of Pabst Blue Ribbon for it!! What a deal
), and I like knowing what all 4 of my rifles are shooting in comparison to the normal numbers for each rifle. I am not familiar with any other kind of chrony, but I would definitely recommend the Alpha Master to anybody that is wanting to get one. Not sure what extras the Beta will give you, because I am not familiar with it. I would say go for the Alpha and never look back! Happy and safe shooting! Cheers!

Get the Shooting Chrony. It is nicely priced and reliable, either the Alpha or the Beta -- whichever model you can afford. Both will do all the calculations you might need, while the Beta can be hooked up to a computer.

I also have the Alpha Master mounted on a tripod & it works almost flawlessly. It's nice having the display right there next to you for easy reading & being able to punch up the numbers without having to get up. I tell everyone who gets a new chrony, get some Lexan or polycarbonate & make shields for the front & rear sensors. Almost everyone who has a chrony has shot, nicked or almost shot their chrony. Also, take some electrical tape & use it to mark off 3-6" on the rods so you know where to shoot for the best readings. I started off with a F-1 & shot it the very first time I used it. Twice! Fortunately, Shooting Chrony has a trade in program where they will take shot up chronies for trade towards a new one. That's how I ended up with the Alpha Master. But if you can pick up the Beta for only $11.00 more, get it. Then you'll have the option of hooking it up to your computer.
