I would like to get some other peoples thoughts on the following issue.

After reading some reviews along with some posts on here, I have decided that I'd really like to get a Walther LGU in .177 as my next Airgun. However at the same time I've been seeing so many references about having Airguns tuned, that I'm thinking I should have that done to my HW97K or R9.

My dilemma is that I'm pretty happy with my guns as they are now. At 65 I'm not as steady and certainly I don't have the eyesight I use to have. While I can shoot one hole groups at 15 yards, it's a whole different story at 35 yards and beyond. Which leads me to believe that these guns shoot much better than I'm capable of, even without a tune. Although I'm guessing that a "tune" would certainly make my guns more forgiving.

Actually the fact of the matter is that I'm pretty ignorant of just exactly what a complete "tune" involves, other than the fact that everyone here seems have them done and swears by the results.

The other issue is that I'd really like to buy a new LGU in .177. My LGV in .22 is really smooth, easy to cock, hardly any vibration, accurate, and is a joy to shoot. Also after shooting my HW97K I'd just like to get another under lever gun.

Not being able to do both, I'd really like to hear your thoughts and opinions on which way to go. Buy an LGU or get a tune done on my HW97K or R9?

You have some nice guns. They say (and it makes sense to me) that a good tune is good for gun and makes them last longer. It's a tough call but I think if it were me I would probably consider taking care of those real nice ones you already have. I have been pretty successful doing my own sanding/deburring/polishing and lubing and the results are very noticeable. The D34P that I recently acquired had already been tuned and a Vortek kit put in. It's the highest valued gun I own and I would like it to stay that way. We bought 2 Mike Mellick full tuned XS-25s and they are incredible.

After reading your post a couple of times I got the feeling you would like the LGU in .177 more than tuning either the R9 or HW97. If your happy with the way they shoot get the LGU.

From your description the one reason I would recommend a tune is cocking will be a little easier.. Cocking isn't an issue the LGU in .177 caliber for sure.

As Bill said above you have some really nice airguns.

Paul ... a good rifle tuned, will probably shoot better than any rifle out of the box, including a TX or LGU. With that said, a tuned TX or LGU will probably shoot better than the HW97 or R9 ... or maybe they all shoot the same? If you buy the LGU, you have 3 nice rifles, un-tuned. If you skip the LGU, tune the R9 and the HW97, you spend about $500 and have 2 crazy accurate tuned air rifles. That is, of course, if you send them off to Scott (Motorhead).

Having had my rifle tuned, I would rather have 2 great tuned rifles .... then wait a year, and buy the LGU (they will get the bugs out by then). So the rest of the gang doesn't jump on my opinion .... ultimately, what you ant to do is buy the LGU, and have them all tuned. I know that's not an option, just said that to keep the wolves at bay.

I had 3 rifles that needed tuning. Instead of buying another rifle that would need a tune I decided to start getting my rifles tuned. I have rather have 2 tuned rifles than 3 rifles that need a tune. For the day when I do not wake up, I want my children & grand children to have something they can remember by.

I do not think so, finances will not let me and my kids are still in school. My children are 11, 13, & 17. They can not get along when I leave them at home to go to the store.

OK, speaking as a guy who just loves looking at, handling, and generally enjoying the guns themselves, almost as much as shooting them...heck, I'd buy the new LGU! Tuning is something that can be budgeted for later (or done at a lesser level yourself?).

I've learned the hard way that emotion beats logic where my hobbies are concerned, LOL! Don't overthink it, buy what you want, and enjoy.

If your airguns shoot good enough for you why get them tuned? You can always tune later if you feel that strongly about it. Get the LGU and enjoy.

If your rifles aren't buzzing and bouncing and they shoot well.....LGU!!
All my rifles are tuned by Scott, Motörhead, and I can't tell you how smooth and accurate they are. Night and day difference from stock....
Tough decision!!
Let us know what you decide....cause I'm gettin a headache just thinking about it!!!

Buying any new gun is buying a 'pig in a poke'. Youse pays yo' money and youse take yo' chances.

Lee Haire aka Shootist has done an outstanding tune on my Diana 34 and is finishing up on my HW50S. Lee is in Springfield, MA which is only 15-20 miles from you. You could drive your guns over to Lee thereby saving the onerous shipping charges. Lee is an honest and a good guy who knows his stuff, why not give him a buzz and talk it over?

To answer your question, if you like your guns as is, you'll absolutely love them after a proper professional tune.

I came to the conclusion that the only way I'll ever understand what a tuned airgun is like is to have one. So I'm going to get my R9 tuned and postpone the purchase of an LGU.

I'm actually surprised you decided this way. This is not normal. But, I have to say.. I, for one, think you went the right way. Not only will you experience a finr gun shooting at it's best, you will be doing that gun a great service. And the best part is, when you get it back it will be like getting a brand new gun. I don't have either of these guns but I do know that the difference in the tuned guns I do have, before and after a good tune is like night and day. I recently got my hands on a D34P fully tuned with a PG2 kit in it. Nice shooting gun.
