What is a Power Adjuster for the Crosman 22xx or 13xx and why do I need it?

Ok, I was checking out more options to mod my Crosman 2289G and found power adjusters.

What is a Power Adjuster for the Crosman 22xx or 13xx and why do I need it?

What is it?
What does it do?
What benefits would I experience by purchasing one and using it?

With the 2289 you basically have a power adjuster already depending how many times you pump depends on how much power you get. They can be beneficial for getting your hammer spring to the max preload without a bunch of spring swaps. I've got a couple of crosman guns with adjusters. The 2260 I adjust it just until spring bind , the 2300 I adjust it where 8 get more shots, less power as I only shoot paper with it in my garage. Hope this helps a little.

It changes the hammer spring preload, so is AKA a preload adjuster, or rear velocity adjuster (RVA).... It allows you to change how hard the hammer hits the valve, which in turn changes the valve lift and dwell, changing the amount of gas (air or CO2) released during the shot.... Many of the common ones only allow an increase in hammer strike, and therefore limit you to increasing the power, not decreasing it to save CO2, or retain air in a pumper.... IMO, they short-change you....

Increasing the preload increases the gas released.... In a 2240, with a short barrel, it simply makes the gun louder, because they are already blowing unused CO2 out the barrel, if you get any velocity increase it is tiny unless you have the barrel length to use that extra CO2.... If you are overpumping a MSP (eg. 1377) and it is retaining air, then you can increase the number of pumps before that occurs, and get a bit more velocity from that....

Decreasing the preload on a CO2 gun saves CO2, and in many cases without a loss (or a minor loss) in velocity.... You can often double the shot count doing this, at nearly the same power.... In a pumper, you can intentionally make the gun retain air, and give you two (or sometimes more) shots on one set of pumps.... The most common setup would be tuning for two equal shots after (roughly) twice the usual number of pumps ....

Wow!  You guys are nothing short of amazing.  I had no clue what the power adjuster was and now I know not only what it is, but also what it can do.

It appears as if I will not desperately need a power adjuster, so I will be content without modded it.  Thanks again Bob for the technical info.

Thanks for the enlightenment.  Ok, please permit me two more questions...

Would I notice any difference by using a stronger hammer spring?  I saw that some of the mod shops offer a Power Hammer Spring and not sure of the benefits.

And last but not least, I keep reading about the Prod trigger.  Can anyone direct me to the right site to purchase one, and/or the exact part numbers required.  Finally, will I notice a wonderful difference by using one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Using a stronger hammer spring on a 2240 will just waste CO2.... On a 1377/2289 it will allow you to pump more times before the gun retains air, but is not necessary if you don't want to do that it will add nothing.... In both guns, it will make them harder to cock....

The PRod trigger requires a hammer that is smooth on the bottom, without the narrow "waist", so you would have to modify your hammer, or buy a replacement (such as the Challenger/PRod hammer for the 22XX).... I don't know of anyone making a straight hammer for the 13XXs commercially....

Mellon will make you one too. I have one of mellons and it works well. The best place to get the trigger is crosman. Download the part list or evp for the maurader pistol and get the complete assembly its cheaper than getting individual parts.  The p-rod/1701 trigger is a great upgrade. All my 13xx and 22xx guns have them. If you are good with jb weld you can modify the standard hammer by filling the waist and sanding smooth.

Fluted and stainless no less! I run this in one of my 2289 with 1701p trigger and it is nice. I am still happy however with my lightened spring,  polished and worked over 13xx trigger in my other 2289. Its just different feel. Both use Disco hammer spring no adjuster dumping 15 pumps. Filled and sanded weight works too.

If you are going to be modding you really need to know how to use the parts diagrams.  They are located on Crosmans web site in the Manuals section.  To order you call the 800 number.  You need to have the part numbers as the reps., while very helpful, will not do your work for you and look up part numbers.  Flat rate $4. shipping & pay with CC.  Usually get order within a week or less.

Just thinking out loud here. What benefit is there from the fluted part of the new hammer? Less friction? New hammer too heavy? I know his other products are good, so don't think I'm bad mouthing. I just don't understand the why part.

Hammer weight is a solid cylinder inside a relatively sealed tube being thrust forward by a spring. Flutes let air get around it easier that's all. At least that's how I imagine it helps hammer weight velocity making it hit the valve a bit harder.

It would add benefits of:

• Cool looks
• A spring guide for the hammer spring

What benefits are after with your 1322?
You want more power, more range?

If you want more power, more velocity, I would start with a 14 inch barrel or longer.
From there look at a flat top piston and valve assembly for it. Combined, those two modifications will make a dramatic difference in power. An 18 inch barrel would add even more velocity over the 14 but now your "pistol" is going to have a pretty long barrel. Most guys end up putting a skeleton stock on the gun at that point and you end up with a great little carbine.

Also consider a steel breach for it which makes a dramatic difference in accuracy and provides rails for optics.

Personally I see no need to use a RVA on a pumper like the 1322. Put a flat top piston and valve in it, port the valve mildly, install a softer spring inside it, and add a discovery hammer spring and you can dump 15 pumps with most 14 to 16 grain pellets and 20 to 24 inch barrel. Shorter barrel will dump even more than 15 pumps.

With 14.3 grain or typical .22 pellets you should see a gain of around 100fps possibly more. I was able to get 685 with a 24 inch barrel and 18 pumps on one of mine.

Well if you build a big valve hybrid or external tank  13xx carbine the power adjuster would be very useful...

Take for instance my MK1322 and instead of cutting an inch off the back of the tube make a 1" valve extension and it will get you about a .37-.4 ci valve... about 40-50 pumps to 1500 psi...with a pump cup

Drop a .177 barrel on it and a power adjuster and you will have a choice between one max power shot with less pumping to recharge or back off the spring preload and get multiple shots...
