They have been a problem for many years. In Hawaii, the "Captian Cook Specials" have destroyed precious rain forest ecology by rooting, promoting erosion and runoff. You should see some of the pictures where streams empty precious silt into the sea. In the Smokey Mountains they have rooted up endangered flora. One of my whistful dreams was to get a nice double rifle, some leather chaps and go afoot down in the region of the Great Dismal Swamp/Back Bay area of southern Virginia where porkers are becoming a chronic problem. Planned on just potting them, dig out the lead and let the scavengers enjoy.

Most all of the boar stock down south can be traced back to a hunting lodge of the late 1800's that decided to have a mounted European style wild boar hunt with traditional spears, etc. They imported the boars and penned them for release but the night before the hunt something (the boars?) spooked the lodge's hound pack who's barking got the boars so excited they tore down the enclosure. (Can't blame Miami International Airport on that one.)

In case you're thinking about tackling one of these cross-breeds with an air gun, they are tough critters. Saw a film showing a boar confronting what looked like a feral Polish White. The pig was about twice the size of the boar but the boar dug in and pushed it backwards. Lots of chest muscle to penetrate plus a gristle shield. Just be careful and watch Old Yeller before deciding how to go about it.

BTW, got the double - a .54 Pedersoli Kodiak but, alas, no longer the ability.

I remember drooling over the Kodiak in cabelas years ago, what a sweet rifle..

A few years ago i hog hunted near Charleston, SC and when the guide dropped me off in my tripod stand i spent the day just awed at the damage they had caused to this field i hunted. Literally it was overturned. In other properties around me, they had unmanned "cannons" that fired every so often to drive the hogs out of the fields and away from the crops. In two days of hunting i never saw a pig.

Because they are smart and don't take long to figure things out. That's why a lot of places are "shoot on sight, targets of opportunity". The program I saw about Hawaii featured a park ranger who packed a .357 just for this purpose.

A coworker of mine just last fall went to culpepper virginia on a pig hunt at a Friends property and took a huge hog with his 7mm. and .44 mag. the hog took the 7mm and ran while tracking the hog decided he wasn't going easy and made a dash at there legs when the coworker finished him with the .44 mag to the fuse box. they are tough animals and when cornered will fight.

several years ago on Kauai(the garden of eden IMO)..i was walking down a fire road cut threw real thick rain forest and heard LOUD noises all around me

. so we stoped and started looking around and about 7 or 8 of these huge beasts sat up quickly!

i guess we woke them up and it freaked us and them out. my girl friend at the time looked at me and said louder then i would have liked" do we run? do we climb tree's!?"

.....so very calmly i said" for now we walk slowly....and if need be we run and climb..." on that note we did a 180 degree turn and got out of there. about a quarter mile up the trail we run a cross a family...mom dad and three teenage girls...i tell dad.."we just woke up 7 or 8 gigantic jungle hogs....you might want to turn around"...the dad looks at us like we are crazy, and they keep walking. about two minutes later they all come running past us on the trail out of the jungle....it was a moment i'll never forget....aloha bart

12 ga. slugs or a 45/70 lever-gun. Don't mess around. Went on a hog hunt down in TN about 4 yrs ago. Got chased up a tree twice. If it wasn't for the "Hounds from *(&^", (big Oorang Airedales) one of those pigs would have gotten me.

A recent episode on Discovery Channel(I think) was about a booming, uncontrollable population of a type of East-Asian pig that has mingled with our resident southern population and is producing some very destructive animals in the 1000lb+ class. They are presently unchecked in their population growth and we're just not able to kill enough of them to make a difference. bad enough that they're moving across the southern tier, but they're moving north as well. Apparently, they seem to do just fine in the Siberian Tundra where they originated. Wont be too long before we'll be saying "Pork, it's what's for dinner!"

I work in and around farm fields. You wouldn’t believe the destruction the wild hogs do to farmers fields. Last year I seen a 100 acre corn field eating down to about 20 acres by the time it was ready to harvest.

I talked to a farmer once and he said that they had trapped 250 hogs that year. Every day, on the back roads, you see a couple of “road kill” hogs.

Yea, hogs or a major problem. They make some pretty good sausage thro.

Bart, in the early 70's me and a shipmate named Rambo (really) decided to go wild boar hunting in the brush of an Army base on Oahu up above Pearl. We were in thickets that were over our heads, walking down pig trails and nothing big enough to support our weight should we try to climb. To dispatch the pigs, my buddy had a Bear Kodiak and I a Bear Grizzly 45# recurve. (Still have it.) Those with broadheads and a Ruger 10/22 as backup. I never saw a pig, but he did see one through the brush. No chance of a shot. And thank goodness. As we were climbing out of the ravine, we saw some flashes of color on the ridge. Turned out to be folks riding on a trail. "Real nice, women and kids on horseback in thick brush" I think We get up to a road and are walking down to the main base when we come upon the back of a billboard. As we pass, I turn out of curiosity to see what it says. In BIG letters there's "Government Property. Hunting Forbidden!" "You check this place out???" I ask. "Uh, yeah, well, kind of...." Talk about sweating the rest of the walk out. Not only that, we were on the border of a state park. Any wounded hog makes it over the line, we're cooked. Later on I realized just how big a pair of fools we were. Had we come across a mamma hog, it would have been wheelchairs, at the very least.

Now, you boys don't let this tale fret you none nor hold you up. Just stock up on them thar PBA's, your Bone Collector and, of course, term life insurance.

From my understanding in southern VA the hogs came about from domestic hogs that were released some where around 100 of them and after a couple years these hogs grew hair and tusk just like your wild hogs and multiplied quickly. there has never been a real season for hunting them but several farmers have gotten permits for killing them under damage control which in turn has become a good cash flow for the farmer allowing hunters to kill a hog for a small fee i have been thinking of doing it myself with a bow but most farms are only doing this at night.

A domestic hog will turn "Feral" faster than any other animal. Most times within a year. They are in central IA and moving north. Getting ready for them here in southern MN. Two of my buddies are thinking about breeding a hog dog. One has a male Oorang Airedale and the other has a Female Plott Coonhound. Should be interesting.

Was interesting article until I got to this part:

Jamison, who killed his first deer at age 5, was hunting with father Mike Stone and two guides in east Alabama on May 3 when he bagged Hogzilla II. He said he shot the huge animal eight times with a .50-caliber revolver and chased it for three hours through hilly woods before finishing it off with a point-blank shot.

OK, an elevenyear old handling a .50 revolver. Those are really hard guns to handle for anyone. And most are five round, so he reloaded? I wonder if he was shooting reduced loads? (Factory "mild loads" are approx double the recoil of a .44 Mag.) Did the hog hold still? Was he in a stand (let's hope so - he's eleven). So, Dad let's an eleven year old chase a half ton wounded feral hog for three hours? Well, he did kill his first deer at only five years old. What state was this? I don't even want to take a walk in those woods during hunting season! You might argue it the other way round and I'm certainly not anti-hunting but five in the woods with a deer gun or eleven with a .50 is kind of irresponsible, private guides or no.

Well i didn't read that far but totally agree, as a hunter, nothing is more important to me than to not let my animals suffer and i think most feel the same way. To allow a child to take on that responsibility is to allow something they have no comprehension of and therefore would probably handle in an irresponsible way. Looks like thats what happened. At least they did see it through though and claim their kill. On the other hand, i wonder if they really expected a thousand pound elephant of a hog. Looks like a .470 nitro express scenario to me. J

I have owned a Desert Eagle in 50 AE. Have shot the 500 S&W. No way is a 11yr old kid gonna shoot either one. I think someone is looking for some publicity $$$$.
