Pellets Whistling?

So I disassembled my Hatsan 125 to do some tuning on it. I removed the LDC that comes stock with it and re crowned with the high tech brass screw in a drill then high grit polishing technique.

I cleaned the barrel up and burned 20 or so Benji domes (26 grain? Mid 20 grains) to diesel off any leftover WD40 cleaner. I quit shooting when the smoke from the dieseling quit.

Then loaded up some H&n 19.91 FTT, fired those off and there is a whistle coming from the pellet. I figured it may be a weird pellet so I shot a grouping. A whistle each time. It's worth noting the grouping was not as good  as most, but not the worse and could be the pellet gun/shooter readjusting a tad.

Curious about the whistling,  I switched back to the benjamins; whistling quit, back to H&n and the whistling returns. At this point I ceased being concerned about the grouping and was focusing on determining the cause of the whistle.

Why is my pellet whistling to me? Did the crowning change something (did I screw up...) if it'd the crowning; why only on H&N?

Very interesting indeed! The only pellets I have ever heard make a sound are the Hunter Extremes that sound like a bull whip! I am concerned with why you chose to use WD-40 though. That will definitely cause dieseling unlike the better and safer to use GOO-GONE. But back to the whistling, have you tried another tin yet? Perhaps it is only that tin that is doing it?

The only thing I can think of is that the lighter pellet is traveling faster than the speed of sound. It happens with non-lead pellets usually. Have you chronied your rifle using the two different pellets ?

Perhaps you can push a few pellets thru it and see if there's a "cut" in them from the barrel.

I have some RWS super points that whistle all the way to the target. Sounds like a duck flying over.

I could hear the JSB's if shot over 50 plus yards with the .25 M-Rod I had. Kind of a zzzzzzzz or fffffffffff sound then THWACK on the target.

No crown problems either.

Well, with your name being "Ben". I'll guess that you aren't a woman, so I can't imagine why your pellet would be whistling at you :-)  Are you a very feminine looking man?

In all seriousness now.  Run a few shots over the chrony and see what you get.  Maybe the lighter pellets are moving much faster, and going supersonic.  That would be my guess.

I used WD40 to remove any debris from the recrowning. We have a home-made WD40 can that we air up with an air compressor; you can spray down a part from the other side of the shed! But it does a great job of pushing stuff out of places. (like pushing an excess debris out of the barrel...)
I didnt want to go too detailed, but since it is a concern; I blew out the barrel with air compressor, then pulled an old tennis shoe string through, then blew more air to make sure I could get the bulk of the WD40 up. Following that I shot the Benjamin pellets to burn up any left overs. I've taken the gun apart a few times and found this method seems to work for me.

The tin of pellets that I'm using was the same tin I was using before I took the gun apart. I didn't have any whistling before, but now I do?

Regarding a chrony, sadly I don't have one. I am getting ready to purchase more pellets but I was going to purchase 4 or 8 of the same can. But if the FTT's are going supersonic, then I should go for a heavier pellet, right?
With that said, if the pellet is going over 1100 fps; at 19.91 grains; the gun is shooting 53fpe? I would love for my springer to do 53fpe, but I'm also a realist and that doesn't sound quite right.

Whistling usually means tumbling, or severe osculating (back and forth wobble without turning all the way over) at high speed for pellets.. Would attribute to poor accuracy also, if that were the case..

  Bullit has it right.  Push a few of the pellets through and look at them using a magnifier.   There is probably a "fin" being formed by the rifling.    Hatsan gives a max of 750fps for the 125, so supersonic is not happening.

Hmm, I was about to say the same thing.   The .22 cal Super Points would make a metallic zinging sound when shot from a Beeman RS2 springer.  Surprisingly, they were far more accurate than I would have ever expected from a pointed pellet.  I don't recall the approximate groups sizes but I do remember anchoring a chipmunk at 40 yards with one.

I have to agree with the skirt being the problem. I read a post where a damaged skirt caused the whistle. As mentioned above , push a pellet through or shoot into a pile of rags and inspect the markings on the skirt. After I crowned my D34 I did just that and found a nice even marking around the skirt and my rifle shoots true.

If it didn't whistle before, then you crowned it, now it whistles.. My GUESS is that you may have crowned it at a angle that maybe isn't obvious, but when the pellet is exiting the barrel a side of the skirt emerges unevenly accompanied by a blast of air from that side, causing the tumble.. try recrowning with lathe, or a way to insure that your drill is perfectly true..

Sounds like a tumbling pellet here too, but I'm no expert. Does it leave a clean hole in a paper target (with cardboard backing)?
