Hi again everyone!

A friend of mine just gave me a shipload [literally thousands] of seemingly very old Crosman .22 pellets that belonged to his dad a long time ago. His dad was a police officer for many, many years who recently went to police officer heaven. My friend had no use for these pellets at all. He gave me all of them...

Not sure if these belong in a museum or if I can safely shoot them!

I noticed the price on these .22 Crosman's was $1.33 at Kmart, so I assume these are more than a few months old...

Ok, I have a couple of questions:

Attention all archaeologists that specialize in heavy metals: How old do you estimate these pellets to be?

Has anyone here ever shot these type of pellets and if yes, what were the results?

The label states, "Lubricated Super Pells."

Do you think the lubrication is still good on these?

What do I look for when I examine the pellet for usability?

Is it possible these are still safe to shoot?

What is the general shelf-life of a pellet?

So sorry, I just ran out of breath asking all these questions...

So long as no cakey/flakey oxidation is on them ... there good to go IMO. What ever lube present in all honesty is really not required to be there anyways being lead is so soft and somewhat self lubricating in an AG barrel.

I remember buying crossman .177 pellets for my 760 in those packages. Likely mid to late 1970's.
But for some reason, it doesn't seem like it was that long ago

Those are the exact pellets I bought as a youngster in the late 70's. They are wad cutters, flat nose pellets. That was all I know of Crosman making at the time. Price is about right too. I never liked them as well as the Benjamin and Daisy pellets, but sometimes you just had to get what was available.

Those old tubes are really cool to see again. I would keep them in good shape with the price tag intact. Don't seem to be much value on the vintage pellets though.

Probably be ok for paper punching and general plinking. Heck the price was right so who cares how they shoot, gives you trigger time. I see you're from the central valley, me too. I'm in the Modesto area.

I remember those we sanded a 45* bevel about 1/2 width( thickness) of the head on the nose with a rock that had the perfect depression for it they then shot pretty accurately out to about 25 yards for us.

I didn't mean the pellets.

Just the empty tubes when your done. I have an old yellow and black metal daisy tin from around that same time. Looks like this one I found on ebay.

I have about 1/2 a tube of those left, still in the original black container as pictured. Bought them many years ago locally when they were the only .22 cal pellets available. They're OK for plinking, & punch nice clean holes in paper targets too, but accuracy is strictly up to whether your gun "likes" them or not. As with any flat-nosed/wadcutter design, I'd keep critter-gettin' to small critters at close range. I say shoot 'em & don't worry.
FWIW- I also have a few of the old Daisy pellets, both .22 & .177, from the yellow/dark brown flat rectangular tins too. And Somewhere a partial tin of old Benjamin HC in .22 cal. IMO, the old Benjamin HC pellets were, by *Far*, the best all-around of the bunch.

yep they were great and what I used for hunting.

And now on flea bay you can get them for the low low price of 44.95...

Strange, isn't it? Speaking of elderly pellets, what about elderly BBs? In a hardware store about 10-11 years ago, I spotted, in the locked glass cabinet where they kept pellets, CO2 & even food for powder-burners

, 3 round cans in that unmistakable old Benjamin Green. When a helpful employee opened the cabinet, we found that they were not the old Benjamin HC pellets as I'd dared to hope-from the size, guess woulda been .22 cal 500 count- but were 1-lb cans of Benjamin Lead Air Rifle Shot. For .177/BB airguns, not the .22 cal they once made. 2 cans were pristine, the 3rd was dented but intact. No telling how long they they had been there, years for sure. A search turned up no more old Benjamin cans of any kind, but I did buy all 3 cans in a fit of nostalgia(or stoopid-idity, take your pick).
A little later on, after getting a Crosman 1377c pistol, I tried shooting a few of them- but there was no real advantage in it. Don't remember if they rolled out the bbl or not. I should probably try to sell 'em, but at 3 lbs for the lot, shipping might be $$$.

My uncle had a tin of those from the mid 60s they were just ok...

The ones I got in the 70s just plain (not good) and about the only other .22 you could get in Reno and Vegas Back then was the Benjis...

I think those were the original flying ash can I hated those...

They were supposed to be like the above supers but in the 70s quality got real bad and the waist sort of filled in.

Dude, you have got to be the most patient and creative person on planet earth!

Well, the tubes these .22 pellets are kept in are made of cheap plastic, not metal so I doubt the tubes or the pellets would be worth anything to be honest with you.

They shot ok through my Crosman 2289. I put close to 250 pellets through the gun this weekend. At 25 yards, they would often leave one jagged hole, and this was from near perfect rest with a rarely used old scope I found in a case in storage [a BSA 4x32]. [I removed my nice red dot to try the cross-hair scope to see if it would be more accurate...]

Then, there would be flyers that would dive off in various directions up to 1.5 inches.

I did notice a number of the pellets had bent or warped skirts. Perhaps that affected the POI.

For a cheap Crosman pump 2289, I suppose I should be happy with that type of accuracy.

Ok, I have a couple of questions:

Anyone here own and shoot a 2289 and if yes, what's the best .22 pellet you found that works on these little guys?

How about a good scope for the 2289?

It doesn't mater that those are plastic. I would love to have a display case with old pellet and bb container's from my childhood mainly. Fond memories I guess. I sure I'm not the only one.
