R9 cocking question?

I have a new R9 with about 800 rounds through it.  Cocking is not hard but not as smooth are my gamo or my friend D34.  I looked and it seems to have enough grease?  I've never seen another R9 so I don't have anything to compare it to.  Any thoughts?

Give it a couple more tins of pellets for "breaking in". My latest R9 (bought a couple years ago) also was a "rough cocker" straight from the box with excessively tight pivot bolt tension from the factory. Now the gun cocks buttery smooth after quite a few thousand of shots.

I do have to admit that the first thing I do when I get a new R9 (or any brand piston gun) is to disassemble and remove the existing tan "factory grease", remove sharp edges from the cocking shoe slot and receiver knockouts with a couple LIGHT strokes of a small jewellers file, then relube with thin application of lube. Currently I'm using either Krytox or Ultimox  but for decades I used the "tried and true" molly paste for internal lubing.

Anywhoo......I once owned a Gamo 440 that I "land filled" after disgust with it's mediocre accuracy (compared to the R9) and the cocking action was rather annoying as the Gamo cocking foot clickety/clackety over the compressing spring coils when cocking. Even in "factory twang mode" all the R9s I've owned/tuned/sold were accurate straight from the box after a bore clean few dozen fouling shots and all would group within 1/2" at 30 yards in factory trim before any real "breaking in". Kinda rough cocking at first....YEP, kinda twangy.....YEP always when fitted with the loose factory spring guide....but still twice as accurate as the Gamo440 I owned for a year! Anywhoo.......I do believe that there are a couple GTA shooters that have tried out my R9 at a THAGC match and they can vouch for the smooth cocking action of my R9. Here is a pic showing 15 out of 20 CPLs going through a 3/4" killzone at 50 yards shot hunter class field target style (sitting on a bucket resting the gun on cross sticks).......

My most recent 5 shot group where 4 out of 5 shots were within 3/8" ctc at 50 yards but the second shot opened up the group to 5/8" ctc.......

LOL, notice how all the groups are strung out on the horizontal....."me thinks" that "swaying" on a bucket while resting the gun on cross stricks has something to do with this! Anywhoo.....definitely not benched PCP caliber groups but I'm satisfied with them!

After 500 pellets the cocking should smooth out, 1000 shots and the shot cycle will be sweet, and after 2000 shots there will be no spring twang. At least that is the way it was with my R11 which is a dressed up R9. Just shoot her.

My 98 was tuned with a Vortek kit by Scott, Motörhead, here on the forum.
Smooth as silk cocking and shooting.
Shot a brand new R9 untuned and the difference was night and day.

  I would recommend that you contact Lee ( shootist ) a member here on the forum.  I was having some problems with my R9 being somewhat fussy and inconsistent.   It had almost 3000 rounds through it and I thought it was great other than the fussy part.  Well when I got it back I thought man, I should have done this sooner. It turned out it had a broken spring so that explained the shooting inconsistency but the real wow was all the other changes.  Really,  really smooth cocking,  solid click on lockup and a perfect trigger.  It is such a joy to shoot how.  Even without the broken spring I know that not all these changes would have happened no matter how many thousands of rounds I ran down the barrel.

Hummm...."after 2000 shots there will be no spring twang" hasn't been my experience at all! While the twang does minimize after the spring takes a kink on the loose factory spring guide and starts rubbing the inside of the piston, there is still enough twang to be annoying to me when shooting! You are correct however that the cocking action does indeed "slick up" as the sliding parts "wear together" with use.

I noticed the slightest twang on mine (HW95 .177) when new, and it went away inside of 100 pellets, probably inside of 20 (it was never pronounced enough to notice without trying to). It cocks smoothly as well, but then I did follow the manuals admonition to lube the pivots. It still vaporizes or diesels a bit after maybe 350 or so pellets. I emailed to ask Weihrach if their lube is combustible or not figuring maybe it was just vaporizing and not dieseling (makes sense they would use a non-combustible lube since they warn against deliberate dieseling, but I don't know). I haven't noticed any proof other than decent chrony velocities (830fps/JSB Exact Heavy) otherwise, but it was clear from their reply that their translation program lost something as they say. All they said was that the lube was necessary.

I did have to kick my rear iron sight over to the left noticeably so I may have a slight bend. I'm waiting on a scope and mounts to check it out from that angle. It locks up good and is accurate as near as I can tell from 10 yards and inside.

Anybody know if the Sportsmatch LOP33C will clear with the Leupold 3-9X33 EFR? My measurements and math say yes but only just. I want as low a mount as possible. I sure wish they came with weaver bases integral to the tube!
