Zero-ing

I am not very experience shooting with a scope. What distance do most of you zero your scope at? I'm sure it will depend on what your normal range is, but that's kind of my point. I shoot mostly in my backyard range, 25 yards. Shooting .22 at 50 was a large drop in POI. If I zero at 50 am I going to have to compensate much when I return to 25? Or should I leave it zero at 25 and just learn to compensate at 50?

I also have 25yards at home but while hunting most shots are 50 yards or more so I zero at 50 and write down my holdovers on a card, so I know where all yardages are...... plus if I mark down where it hits @ 25yards while zeroed @50 then I can use that mark to re zero @ 50 If I want to change my zero at home...that make sense?

Years ago I played with .177, .20 and .22 barrels on my home tuned R9s and sold all the "fat calibres" reverting back to .177 never to look back. The reason.....the trajectory of the .20 and .22 made shots past 30 yards too "iffy" due to the need for extremely accurate "range guestimation" for the proper holdover.

Anywhoo......I zero my .177 R9 for 25 or 30 yards (close to the apex of the pellet flight) and use the mil dots on the scope reticle as aiming points at distances closer than about 20 yards and further than about 32 yards. What i do is actually focus my scope and mark the "sharp focus distances" on the AO or sidewheel like this..........

I do my focusing at 12x and if the "+" aligns with the pointer I know to hold the crosshair "dead on". If the "." lines up with the pointer then I know to hold with the first lower dot on the target. If the ".|." lines up with the pointer I know to hold between the first and second lower dot on the target......so on and so forth.

Now if I'm squirrel hunting by stalking I simply set the focus to 25 yards and the power ring to 6x and go hunting. I almost always try stalking within 30 yards (or closer) if possible!
I consider my .177 R9 to be a short range arm and never exceed shooting past 40 yards at living critters, and then only under PERFECT conditions!

Anywhoo.....for my 67 year old eyes a scope is a necessity so I had to learn how to deal with the limitations of my preferred spring powered airgun. If I expect to do a lot of shooting at critters from distances past 40 yards I'll be using my rimfire and not my R9!
