Looking for suggestions on a air rifle for a newbie

Is somewhere between 35-40 feet long enough to setup a target shooting range in my basement. If the answer is yes my next few questions are, without going hog wild spending money on a air rifle I would like to get one that is designed as a sniper type rifle. I would appreciate all any any input to that question. I know a lot about handguns but I am totally a newbie in the air rifle field. I guess this post I will focus on which rifle and what type of ammo would be best for my situation. Then once I make up my mind as to which rifle I will but and ammo I will use I will then in another post discuss how to build the best stop so that I am being as safe as possible.

not sure what you mean by sniper type rifle. A bolt action?  if you're going to be indoors in winter. a scoped hammerli 850 will put all shots in the same hole at 30-40 feet . it can  hit 1" targets at 50 yards easily. its co2 powered. easy to own, easy to shoot.  co2 is terrible in cold weather though.

Yes, that's plenty of room  A very standard air rifle and air pistol target shooting distance (it's even an Olympic event) is 10 meters (33').  You can make a target backstop with a sturdy cardboard box and fill it with old magazines or there are plenty of posts here on how to build a pellet trap.

You'll need to provide more information about what use you will have for this rifle.  If it is only shooting targets in your basement, then get a target gun.  How much do you want to spend?

First - WELCOME to the GTA!!! Would help if we knew what your budget for the rifle is. You can buy a $100 rifle that you probably wouldn't care for as you do know firearms in the sense of handguns. Then again you could spent $1000's for a target gun. Or you could spend say $500-$600 and set yourself up very nicely with a rifle you'd be proud to hand down. IMO you can't beat German made. I will try to answer all the questions in this one reply,

The only use for this rifle is target shooting in my basement. I have no interest in hunting so the rifle will be used in my basement to target shoot and that's it.

I did a search for Sniper type air rifles  if you  don't know what I mean by "Sniper type"  all I can suggest is to do a Goggle search for "sniper type air rifle" Sorry I don't know enough to give you any answers, I just know what I saw when I did the search, I was going to post a external link to show you what results I got but the forum said I wasn't allowed to post external links.

Just Goggle "Sniper type air rifles" and you will see the type I would like. I'm not stuck on this type but it is what appeals to me as far as looks. I guess if all I plan to do is target shoot a sniper rifle would be the perfect chose in my mind, I also admit that my mind is not educated enough on this subject to chose a rifle so the sniper type might not be the right rifle for me.

As far as budget goes. I really have no limit but don't want to spend $500 when a $100 rifle will do that same thing.

my google search of sniper type air rifles came up with air soft guns, not the same. if thats what you want  ,   I'm out of ideas with out more info.

Why don't you find some of these "sniper rifle" types of air rifles  that look interesting to you and give us makes and model numbers, since you haven't posted here enough to be able to post links.  There are a whole bunch of possibilities, many of which are far more gun than you would need solely for indoor target shooting.  For instance, Hatsan, a Turkish manufacturer, makes several Model 125 sniper variants with a synthetic stock with adjustable cheek piece and a bipod, but this is a 10lb+ magnum rifle with a heavy 50lb cocking force that will send many lighter pellets supersonic with a loud crack like a .22lr.  You clearly don't need that sort of gun to shoot targets indoors at 10m or so.  There are also a number of PCP (pre-charged pneumatic) rifles that look like some variation on an .50 Barrett-type sniper rifle, assault rifle or sci-fi laser rifle in appearance.  Most of those will run you well over $500, though, and many of them are intended for hunting or longer range target shooting outdoors and will have a lot more power than one would need at 10m.  By the way, you'll probably want a .177 for target shooting, since the pellets are cheaper and you won't need to worry about knockdown power and energy.

One can find some used bargains out there in the classifieds from time to time on recoilless competition match air rifles, which generally have fairly thick heavy stocks and shoot at the modest 500-600fps that works best for flathead wadcutter pellets that one will want to use for serious target shooting; new, these guns by brands such as Anschutz, Feinwerkbau, and Walther are in the $1,500++ range, but older used ones can sometimes be had for under $500.  However, Daisy makes a number of single-stroke pneumatic target-specific air rifles that seem to be highly regarded for accuracy in the $130-$380 range - check these out:

I'm guessing a vertical or pistol type gripped rifle is something you are thinking of.  If shooting in prone position a rifle with a bi-pod would be something to look at.  And if shooting in the prone position a CO2 or PCP air rifle may be easier rather having to pump or cock.  Also shooting in a confined area would something with a quite report be in order some air rifles can be pretty loud.

Guys keep in mind I said up front that I know nothing about air rifles, I said that this type of rifle was the type that I was drawn to by the looks....ONLY LOOKS

It is not what I want it is only what caught my eye...

I have a lot of research to do with all the input from many of you and more of my own research..

So everyone settle down.........lol,  no worries I am not even close to buying a air rifle yet, I was just asking questions to educate myself.  Also I only posted that rifle to show some of the guys who replied that didn't know what I meant by a "sniper type rifle" so I posted the name since I can't post links.

So once again don't focus on anything that I have said except that I am new, I know nothing about air rifles and just wanted some different suggestions, That's all.  Although as I look   I am finding out that to get a good quality air rifle and scope I will end up spending as much as I could spend on another Glock ( I collect Glocks )

Thank you I will do that, I didn't know of those resources, I guess there is a lot I don't know and anything that can help  me learn and decide which rifle is right for me is a good thing.

no one need to settle down...

you just have a lot of learning to do...

plus realize what you think is often different than what you say...  you did not say it was the sniper look that you  like...

me I like the sniper like accuracy of my 953 so I would be pre disposed to see your statement that way if you are not being specific.

indoors you want a low fpe rifle  for outdoors and hunting you want high fpe.

you also need to look at the pros and cons of different powerplants...
