Need some recommendations for a .22 for small game hunting between $250-$280

The  34 is looking like the best choice but I did a little searching around and found a stoeger ATAC. any opinions on those?

The new ATAC is updated from the popular "X20s" model.  The gas piston is new, and the stock and weaver rail.  It's a pound heavier than the X20s,... and the heavy 40# cocking effort for the same power output of the 30# cocking effort X20s, (both put out 15-16fpe class),  the choice is up to you.  I'm still a fan of a good reliable spring.  Consistent, and Easy/cheap to replace or upgrade power, pretty quickly.  Adding GRT-III trigger is well worth $33.00.   COMBO scopes "are what they are"...Add a better scope later, but it'll get you started:

I think I am gonna go with a diana but I'm starting to lean towards the pro compact in .177 I won't be hunting anything bigger than rabbits and squirrels and it will be under 30 yd shots where I hunt. I may be getting a benji 392 in a trade so I would like a pump in .22 more than a break barrel.

Hunt the 392.  Save up for a Diana fixed barrel rifle.  You'll be very glad you did.

I agree with bullit.  Use the 392, save more money, but more quality.  Buy once, cry once- except you are still probably gonna get another

Save the money , Hatsan 125 combo in .25  only $110 now at midwayusa . Best deal ever seen ! accurate and powerful .

The Diana 34 is a great rifle.  The Benjamins aren't bad, but you will be dropping more cash and time into a new trigger.  The RWS 34 is a complete package.

This question has been asked a thousand times on this forum.  Do a search for RWS 34 and spend some time reading the comments.  You will see why it is the best rifle in your price range.  Go with the .22 and get shooting...

$250 ~ $280 with scope?  Crosman NV or Benjamin Trail NP XL.  For few bucks more, Diana 34 with scope.
