Shortening springer main springs so they free float to eliminate torque

I have no interest in velocity only accuracy for off-hand shooting. I have shortened the main spring of my Crosman 1000X to eliminate torque. I removed six coils from the spring and flattened one and a half coils and polished the flat smooth. As close as I can determine the spring has about 1/4" of longitudinal play.
So far the experiment appears successful with no detectable torque. There is still recoil but it has been minimized and seems in line with the length of the rifle. Ten meter accuracy from a bench rest with RWS .177 Hobby pellets is outstanding.
I have had comments from only one gentleman who initially said the spring would bind and then that the spring action would ruin the piston and seals. I no reason why this should happen, and after a hundred pellets there is no evidence of this. I can see one additional advantage to a shortened spring; spring life should be increased because it is not in a constant state of compression.
Comments would be appreciated.
