Gun Storage
«
on:
July 26, 2010, 12:53:51 PM »
I was reading in another post about POI changing day to day and someone asked how the gun was being stored. Standing on butt, lying down or upright in a gun rack.
So what's the best way to store your gun?
I have rifles standing and my pistols are upright.
Maybe store is the wrong word store indicates non-use. How about set your gun down until next the day or for a couple days. Mine don't go much more than that in-between use.

Don't know? I do store mine muzzle down in my vault's,just a habit I have with my PB's? I would say I have never noticed a P.O.I. that I could blame on the way a weapon is placed for storage, now with travel yes I place them scope up as in a shooting hold because of the bump's an vibe.'s that are done to it.

Forgot, now temp. changes do have an impact on scope's as well as the harmonic's of a weapon's P.O.I.,an with a springer's already sensitive hold nature make a big diff. over all.

Probably if you store the guns the same way all the time it shouldn't matter.
I will say that I now store my springers standing butt down. I stored a couple horizontally in a wall rack for awhile and every time I shot them they would smoke for the first few shots like they'd been re-oiled or something. That messed with the way they shot. Those that stand on their butts didn't smoke, so now I store them all butt down so nothing runs into the compression chamber.

Mine are all in cabnets, except my pump guns and a co2 gun, wich are on a wall rack.

Liars, Liars your soul's are on fire...
We should not lie or hide our guns from our wife's..... hehehehehe
I store my guns mostly on an open gun rack in my office. But over the years I have run out of room at times and have put them in my closets and where ever else I can.
I would say the safest way to store guns is in a cabinet that is moisture free. But I have no room for the cabinets that would hold all my Guns so I just sit them in my gun rack with the butts down or on my wall rack, horizontal.
IMO, extreme temperature changes will effect POI. For instance if I take one of my guns out of the house where it is a cool 69 degrees and go outside where it is 90 degrees I will have to change my scope settings at first. Normally many of us setup our scopes outside. So if we set our scopes up in 90 degree temps, and take them in the house where it is much cooler, things will change. Generally after setting my scope up outside and I have it spot on, the next time I bring it outside I will just let it sit for an hour. That way it will warm up and should retain the original POI.
But if I shoot it right away the POI may be off some.
Just my personal experience.

Store them as safely as possible, first. Treat them just like a firearm in this respect. Having been burglarized (by a realtor who used a lock box key, no less) I can tell you that you need secure storage. My guns are locked up and butt down. Mostly because I don't want to ding the muzzles (even in heavy gun sacks or socks) and, with springers, it keeps the lube from migrating ahead of the piston. Ditto firearms but I keep those VERY lightly lubed. (If you've ever seen an old single barrel shotgun from the 30's with a wrist that is 10% wood and 90% hardened oil, you will know what I mean.)
Go to a gun show, buy some inexpensive tie wraps. They have them made from some kind of synthetic, foam like fabric now. Avoid those that feel like the back of a carpet. I've seen some that I do believe would take the finish off a stock. Get a silicone gun sock (WalMart, for example, seven bucks), and slip into that, then the wrap. Now you don't have to worry so much about safe dings, etc. Before you stow them, wipe them down with something like Birchwood Casey Barricade (the old Sheath, new name). I've used it for twenty years without a hitch. It's a PITA to haul them out to shoot, especially scoped, but it pays off in the long run.
