Question about my LGV 177

  The sound it makes when fired is like a Hoooonk not a crack. Even my 11 yr old son said, " Dad why does it sound like that"?  This is my first springer so I don't have anything to compare it too. I'm not whining cause I love this gun, it is very accurate. Is this perhaps the spring buzzing? I know it's hard to say if you haven't heard it yourself. I just thought I'd ask.

I have one, too, and it does sound different from other springer airguns. It's more like a thunk, but I wouldn't say it was a "honk". However, I don't think you should hear a "crack," either.  I would suggest viewing one of the many videos reviewing the LGV to see how they sound

Honking sound.   That's pretty common with a dry piston chamber.  The piston seal edge, is just vibrating up and down the chamber.  Take the stock off and put 3 or 4 drops of light oil (crosman oil will work), in the front end of the slot that shows the spring.  With barrel pointed down.  You are looking to put a fine film of lube on the walls of the tube.  Let it get in there, and next you'll exercise the action to spread it.   You don't need to fully cock it, but just exercise the action to spread it, and see if this helps you.
EDIT:  Don't put more in it, as this encourages Detonation....  Bad stuff.

Mine honks  and got worse, so I'm tore my lgv down to relube it. I decided to get the QX 4600 main spring from ARH for a sub 12 ftlb. gun. I already have the moly paste and the heavy tar from ARH. I think the honking is coming from the spring in side the piston . The inside the piston is really ruff. The spring was covered with oily moly and so as the out side of the piston. I also bought some Ultimax 226 with for the piston and compression tube. Should get the spring in a day or two.  I'll let you know how it turns out.   Don

Well, the new spring came in yesterday and it was maybe 1  in. longer then the stock one. I went ahead and installed it.  It tested at 14.6  ftlbs. stock was 14 ftlbs. No honking after the lube job.
So, today I removed the spring and cut 3 coils off. Then  heated  and reheated the end and bent it flat, then ground the end smooth and installed it.
Shot it once and it was smooth and quite.  I haven't chronyed it yet, maybe tomorrow.

I never had any issues with this sort of noise with my LGV Master in .177 apart from developing a little bit of spring buzz after the first 150 shots or so.  I suspect it got a little noisier after some dampening lube moved off of the spring.  But really, the noise amount is very small and doesn't bother me when shooting.  I suspect a relube might help your sound issues.

I was lucky enough to have shoot Mikes Walther lgv .22 before i bought mine. His lgv was the sweetest springer I've ever shoot! His was tuned by motorhead an shoots at 12 ftlbs. He said the stock lgv shot as nice as his rws 34p which was also tuned by motorhead.
Well, my lgv was noisy. After the lube job it as a lot quiter, just a thud. I planed on tunning it to sub 12 ftlbs. so I order the spring right a way. The lgv shoots lot smoother at sub 12ftlbs then stock 14 ftlbs.   The Walther lgv was designed around sub 12 ftlb. springs.      Don

Now I'm getting 11.5  ftlbs. out of my Walther LGV. Then I decided to change the trigger travel. I tried screwing the screw in but it was all the way in, so I backed the trigger screw out and it didn't change. Then I took it all the way out and no change in trigger travel.
I went to  True Value and bought a longer 3mm machine screw for .22 cents. Installed the screw in the same depth as the original screw, then proceed to slowly turnning the screw in to change the trigged travel, it also lightener the trigger as well. Just letting you know you don't have to buy the tuning trigger if you don't want to, just to get a nicer trigger pull.

  Ok it sounds like a lube is in order. Don does the stock spring have alot of preload? Is a spring compressor recommended? I have read no it's not needed but want to hear it first hand from someone on the GTA.

Yes, there is a lot of spring load. A spring compressor would be the best. You have two pins you must tap out, to remove the plug and trigger assembly. I used a long wood clamp and almost ran out of threads. I duck tape the ends of the plug and compression tube as not to damage the metal. It is an easy gun to taken apart.     Don
