4-16x50 or 6-24x50 for general use?

Hi all,

since I'm not experienced in PCP air rifles, which optics magnification would you recommend for a general use (little of paper punching, a lot more of plinking and maybe, but just maybe a hunt or two)

4-16x50 or 6-24x50?

It will be mounted on a Weihrauch HW100 41J of energy

Hi, I actually have both on a set of rifles, they each have their pluses and minuses.

The 4-16 is easier to hold offhand as it doesn't magnify the body shake like a 6x does.

Also, this part depends on the scope, but what size is the exit pupil, at the higher magnifications, the eye relief and position can get very critical.

I find I use the 6-24 on 6-18 mostly.
Rarely more than that for the above reason.

Now the 4x16, I use on all magnifications, but the highest settings is shooting from rested positions.

What manufacturers are you looking at?

I have never used a 6-24 but I own and use a 4-16
and its work great for me(target shooting/plinking and pigeon hunting under 50 yds)
I have thought a 3-12 would be nice though as I manly leave mine at 10x.
for rested longer range 40+ yds shooting a 6-24 would be nice but for general use
My vote is for a 4-16.

You have bought a great gun. You need to put some serious glass on it

Some things I would look for

Target turrets- Repeatability and accuracy
AO - adjust down to 10yds
Objective Lens size. - I don't need a 50AO on my air gun. The 40 can be mounted lower to the axis of the bore.

Check out Bushnell Elite. The airgun silhouette guys love them. Its on my to buy list as soon as im not broke.

4-16 if those were the only 2 ranges you were interested in.

Either would work well on the bench.  The 4-16 would work better hunting as the lower magnification yields a wider field of view.

I agree the 40mm objective would probably be preferable, especially for the 4-16.  It doesn't stick up as far from the barrel and allows you to use medium mounts instead of high.

I do have a 4-16 X 50 and find my 3-9 X 40 admits almost as much light and is far less cumbersome.

it depends on your preference. I use both, the higher magnification allows me to zoom in on the longer ranges that the 4-16 can't.
I'd rather have the higher as it's better to have and not need than to need and not have.
as you can see what's on mine and the others I have.

.............. The difference between 4 and 6x on the bottom end is not really all that much, the difference between 16 and 24 is great. ..........

i don't hunt but i agree %100 . had a 4-16 and never used 4x or 6x and found myself wanting more magnification on the top end so i got a 6-24 . i would have got a 8-32 but i couldn't find one that would focus down to 10-15 yards in my price range that would handle a springer i hope to get in the near future . higher mag also allows me to see i'm shaking so i can compensate to become a better shooter . i do faux hunt (track in the scope and pull the trigger on my cocked but unloaded and unpumped crosman pumper) and almost never go below 10x .

and i'll second farmerjoe99's side focus suggestion . it's much easier to access for adjusting and to read the distance markings , not that stock markings on front or side AO are always accurate . some folks find them to be close enough for their purposes but some don't and add their own distance marks .

The 16x is fine for all around use. The 24x is great for target, but then the 16x is too. Get which one you like, but you will not use 24x much. I use mostly 16x and down on my 6x24 56mm.

If your gun is heavy dont add weight to it with a scope, get the lightest weight of the 2. My 6x24 is way too heavy. If the 6x24 is lighter buy it! Oh and get a Side Focus or you will regret it.

As presumed, opinions are divided as is mine.
But, I see that more of you lean to 6-24

I was thinking on BSA, Bushnell, CenterPoint, Nikko Stirling, Leapers/UTG and even Vector Optics, other are out of my price range.

Almost all are 6-24x50

There is a nice BSA Stealth 6-24x44 used being sold near me.

Do you thing it would be a good scope?

I could get it for $150
New ones are sold for $300 in this part of the world
