discovery barrel band location

where do you want  our barrel band to be- I have two one my rifle came that way- one is near the barrel end the other about mid-point- I think it is factory location from the big dent  from over tightening the grub screw.

What is the best place to have them???

I ask only because, as I insert the action into new stock the middle band is in the way- OK- groove the stock!!! Done- or open stock so tube- barrel- and band never touch stock??

Or move band out further to barrel end??? THIS question has more value to me- Are we just keeping barrel form getting flexed- bent- free floating?  if two bands are good then why not three - front- mid and rear bands?? I know what is simple to do- move band out past stock end BUT is that right - what , how would you do it??

I am getting a second band. One will go where the dent is in front of stock and the other will go towards the tko end.
I dont know if it needs it but I will feel better when hunting.

We all have our idea of where a 2nd band should go, and none of us is wrong even though they are in different spots.  All I can say is that you should test it, playing the gun like a slide trombone, until you find the spot that works best for you.

Personally, I use two bands.  One inletted into the4 stock just ahead of the breech and one down at the end of the barrel.  With this arrangement, POI styas stable from day-to-day, month-to-month.

- was planning on the last version- did not know if any one could say for sure one way was better than another...

in my searches I found a barrel band that had three grub screws for each tube for centering?? looked uber cool- might do well in it's effect- looks cool -

I like the idea of have the 1st band tied into the stock right at the breech - not sure if there would be any benefit that close to the  breech- should be stiffer there than mid point??

Having the barrel band just ahead of the breech is just a way of better stablizing the breech.  The factory system relies on that dinky little breech screw and kind of sux for stability.

Can't swear that tha placement makes it more accurate, but can swear that it keeps it shooting to the same point of aim day after day.

I like stable- makes it predictable -

the challenger stock I have has the band groove cut in already- not in the right place for the Disco but that can be fixed real quick-
I have been working on several Disco stocks at the same time trying to make them all well thought out with shooters in mind not just me-


Woods:
A. full sized adult Walnut stock hunter's stock - no cheek riser  Iron SIGHTS  "only"- American wal. ---I can get French and Turkish if needed-
B. same stock as above- with cheek riser- for scopes- non adj. butt-
C. wood version of Challenger- Standard (Jr. ) and Adult full sized- slightly longer handgrip area - longer butt stock (optional taller cheek riser) for those
D. SSHHHH secret project - can not tell you or I would have to cut out my own tongue ...

Alloy: DISCO proto gun stock
Teryx stock - NO 1913 RAIL- that will be optional to screw on- using G36 rails or GGG- depends what I can get a deal on - mounting point if I can do it- for rails 3 and 9 position on the clock at the very front end of stock
Bringing out: Wood FORE ARMS  yes wood- Benchrest version flat long wide - slim, for small hands  carrying it all day - T track rail installed for bipods- 'weights' 10m training guns et

this new alloy stock  will have new features- MAKING THE DISCO my personal testbed for other projects
I want to cut if needed the grooves for the barrel bands- SOME ONE mentioned having those band locked into the frame?? I could do this - at the spot near breech and the very end of stock- so two band would be one rifle locked into the alloy stock.....this sound like a very good idea -

I'm with Ribbonstone on this - probably got the idea from him... I know I've seen his photo before.  I have one in front of the gauge - you have to split the sleeve that is ahead of the breech.  The 2nd one I "tromboned" from just ahead of the forearm to as far forward as I could - shooting 5 shot groups and evaluating.  I ended up smack in the middle between the forearm and full forward.

That's my $.02 and probably worth about that much

i hope these show up- trying to post picture of the stocks I am having inlet for Discos. Gen2 Marauders and also a challenger or two...nope too big a file...?

Not going to say it’s the only way to get a Disco stable and accurate.  Know it works great, but are probably multiple ways to skin this cat.


My first SDisco stayed stable with just one band, it  just didn't shoot well enough for me to keep farting around with it.

My 2nd Disco shot great, but would wander point of impact form day to day (or even hour to hour).

Not enough room behind the gauge, so the barrel band goes in front.



Split the sight base so one part goes to the rear of the band and the other to the front.

Inlet stock. I have no real wood working skills, but you only have to be neat where  at the top edge of the stock (the only part visible from the outside).





Want the band to pull down tight.  This will really extend the anchor points of the breech. Done right, it makes no difference if that horrible little breech screw is tight or loose.


While I was playing, went ahead and made a 6-scre barrel band for the front.  Basically the two issue screws top and bottom, with two angled screws forming a kind of tripod.

Helps to drill/tap though the thickest part of the band.



Idea here is to make the air tube tight to the bottom tripod, but the barrel just barely loose in the top tripod.  Just enough slack to feel.

To be honest, 6-screw band probably doesn’t work any better than shimming the front barrel band tight to the air tube and adjusting the top screw to give that tiny bit of slack for the barrel.
