When airguns are advertised they give a Feet Per Second. What pellet weight do they use to determine this. Is there a industry standard for each caliber?

Most of the better manufactures will post 2 numbers usually the super fast 1100,1200-1400 fps are achieved with very light alloy pellets not accurate and usually will lead to premature spring failure in the springer rifles.The actual usable fps is usually with a heavier lead pellet. The high fps numbers are a sales gimmick and no one who has been into adult AG's will give any serious thought the high fps because it leads to non repeatable shot placement since the pellet goes unstable as it passes the sound barrier leaving the barrel and usually again well before hitting the target. Practical and useable (accurate) fps is somewhere between 800 fps and 950 fps . Hope that helps . When looking at a particular rifle may be good to look at an online review.  Where they give the facts and not fluff.  The testing would give pellet weight and the fps also the fpe. JMO

Many times, the ratings with lead pellets, are with the lightweight match pellets. 7g or less.

Forgot about that I don't shoot anything less than 8 gr pellets out of my Pro Sport learned that lesson with the D460 when the spring decided to make itself shorter last April

Truly.  Don't get so hung up on velocity(fps).  Don't know how much you wanna spend, but I'll easily give up 100fps (or 300fps vs advertising) , if the rifle is accurate.  THAT matters the most.  Some of Our euro brethren are limited to 12fpe,.,.muzzle energy, without expensive license,,,,and have been very happy to rub our noses in it,  as "power gluttons".  Accuracy is the ticket, no matter the caliber or FPS.

I think that the precision comes from the shooter taking the necessary measures for accuracy ie : breathing, hold, trigger, and follow through

Like the convienance of the FX Indy/Independece.
Easily settled if the dog would start pooping gold nuggets!
Seriously like researching the purchase. Most of the fun would be in the back yard, 80' fence to fence
Any thoughts regarding the above rifles would be highly appreciated.

Marauder Gen II decent rifle,  Air Arms can't fault that choice (love mine) , FX Indy (interesting concept) and FX has decent reputation, just remember that at the minimum you will need a hand pump to fill any PCP you decide to buy

The original poster has a point which is a good idea.  In this day and age, with this many professional vendors and shooters etc...  I can't imagine why the industry has not agreed upon a standard pellet for each caliber fired under standard conditions whereby vendors can be honest about their products.  It has always been a point of frustration for me to know that vendors are cooking  the numbers.  If we had more confidence in the published numbers ... well whatever ... It would be nice to know exactly what this or that model does out of the box new.

Seconding the comments about accuracy.  Speed is fine.  Accuracy is final.  Posted some pics of my RWS 48 that Charlie Da Tuna did for me a few years ago.  When I got it back I was disappointed because it was shooting a hundred feet slower than when I sent it.  Silly me!  Charlie got it right and I didn't even know it.  That gun shot a dime sized group with CPs this afternoon in a variable five mile per hour crosswind.  Chairgun said wind drift at 28 yards was about an inch.  It shot under 3/4".  I was impressed so I started shooting at the seed pods on a Yucca at about 40 yards and was picking them of one after the other.  One mil hold over and one mil windage exactly like Chairgun said and the ping pong ball size pods were just dropping like rain.  Not bad for a springer!  The gun is holding about 7.3 ft/lb at 50 yards and that's probably about the max for the rifle in my hands.  Groups would be about the size of a ping pong ball at that range.  Even so the squirrels had better watch out this fall.  That is bang on two mil dots low according to the handy little chart in my Avatar
