Rear Sight Screw

I have a 1969 Blue Streak with a notched rear sight. As i posted in the intro section I got this for $20 at an antique shop. I took it apart and cleaned it up, ordered some pellets for it and now I am trying to sight it in.

The rear sight is off center. I am sure this is due to it's age and the fact that I bet it has been dropped a ton of times before I got it. the antique shop didn't think it worked so I am sure it has not been handled very carefully over the years.

Well it works wonderfully but there is a missing screw for the rear sight.  It seems to be held on to the barrel by 2 tiny Phillips screws. Where can i get a replacement screw for this? Any ideas would be helpful. This gun shoots great I just was hoping to get it adjusted but think i may need the parts before I go to the effort of zeroing it.

That doesn't sound like the original rear sight. The Sheridan rear sight clamps onto the barrel by the force of it's shape. There are two wedges that fit between the barrel and the pump tube on either side. The rear sight grips these wedges. The wedges have a tendency to separate the barrel from the pump tube over time because of the clamping pressure applied to them.

There are three screws. Two slotted round head screws for adjusting windage and one setscrew for adjusting elevation.

Can you take a close up photo of your rear sight and post it?

Are you sure it's a 69 and does it have a thumb safety? I think some of the older guns may have had rear sights that had set screws in the side instead of wedges? Pictures really help with questions like this.

The rear sight on my '67 Sheridan is held on with two tiny "star drive" screws.  Look like Phillips until you look closer.

You might try Brian & Associates for a screw, I have had good luck getting old parts from them.

it looks like the sight posted above but it does not have wedges. It has two tiny screws to clamp it to the barrel. I would love to post pictures if someone would explain how. the serial # on it is 9691G so I believe that makes its manufacture date of July 1969.

The screws attaching the rear sight to the barrel on your '69 are .069 4-flute bristol head set screws (some used allen head screws). The thread size is 5-40, which is the same as the elevation screw. Original screws will be difficult to find. Bryan and Associates is a good place to start.

How long are the 5-40 setscrews? I was a typewriter technician way back when and still have my service tools and parts. I have a selection of bristol head setscrews. If I have it I'll send you what you need and a bristol wrench to fit.

Steve, I checked and none of the bristol setscrews are fine 5-40 thread. 

The elevation screw on my rear sight was missing (same size thread). I found a black 5-40 thread allen cap screw, cut off the head and cut a slot in it with a Dremel. Works good. It's in the photo posted above.

Nice, glad you could help him out. Those screws have to be next to impossible to find without folks like you here on GTA.

I tried but unfortunately didn't come up with the screw he needed. None of the bristol setscrews I have are fine thread. The more I work on guns, air or powder burner, the more I run into thread sizes rarely used anywhere else. Like why are the mounting screws on a Williams peep sight 6-48? Ever try matching threads on a WWII Lee-Enfield? 

I do have extra six and four flute bristol wrenches though...

No doubt hardware stores just don't carry screws or anything for air guns. I have had some luck finding silicone o-rings for CO2 guns at a local supply house. Have you tried to contact Bryan and Associates recently?

Maybe the answer is to tap the sight out for a screw size that he can find?

i did end up tapping it out to a size i could find. then cut off the head and notched the top. I do appreciate the effort to find one for me. Thanks everyone!
