Crosman 1701P Regulator conversion for PFT duty all finished.

Been a spell working with many PCP pistols so figured I would share this one that was done up as a personal gun.

So, picked up a Like New 1701P in a trade for service / parts work with another GTA member that went into the shop for some serious R&R conversion for "Hunter" Pistol Field Target use.

Ordered up a LONGER P-rod main tube, Barrel bracket and some service parts.
* The longer tube is IDENTICAL for Trigger & Receiver fitment but differed in Gauge hole position.
Seems the P-rod uses a longer gauge adapter than the 1701 does.     No issue just made a spacing collar going between valve and adapter to recenter it. That added plenum space which worked out along with boring the I.D. of adapter larger anyways.
Volume ahead of valve between regulator came in at @ 7.8 cc BTW

Some valve mods to increase flow IN & OUT, Transfer tube sized to match valve at @ .098"

In went a Custom ( Milo74) regulator. Set point @ 1300# for starters.

Manufactured a Billet 7075 alloy Light weight hammer weighting in at @ 24 grams.

Manufactured a Delrin / Carbon tube LDC taking OAL barrel length to the legal sub 15" limit ... very hush being just a TINK sound when fired.

All assembled with MINIMUM spring preload it shoots CPD 7.9's @ 710 fps which in just knocking on 10 ft lbs. Perfect power for PFT with more power avalible a screw twist away.

Set out target box at @ 23 yards and proceeded to place 10 pellets nearly threw the same hole off a single shooting bag with 7.3 JSB's ( 7.3's are more accurate )

I think crosman just has the gauge close on the 1701P because there is no forestock.  The stock prod comes with an alum spacer between valve and gauge block.

Looks like that might be Franks ole gun.  After seeing this, he might be 2nd guessing his decision now.

Once you get to testing, would be interested to see how that regulator treats you during in a full shot string.

Just received a Robert Lane regulator for my 1701. It is a really nice looking unit and I am hoping it works better than the AoA unit I had been using. I am setting the gun up for AP Silhouette competition, so don't need much power, but would like to be able to do 2 matches (80 shots) without refilling.  If it works well, might get another to put into my 1720 for PFT, which is why I asked about the shot count.

I had left valve throat and transfer passage at the factory specs only matching transfer tube to body size.  Way gun is shooting when I lean on the spring or hammer weight tells me it's starving for air with Regulators pressure currently set.  It is a balance and just need more fiddle time with it

Very interesting.  Re 'starving for air' - perhaps you need a larger plenum for the regulated air?
The regulator sounds like the way to go for me. I would be happy shooting PFT and getting 40-45 shots at 8-9 fpe.  Do you offer a tuning service?
My unregulated 1720 gets only about 20 shots before POI @ 30 yd changes; shooting AA 8.44@ 8.5 fpe using a .065" TP.
Heavier pellets (AA 10.3) using a 0.082" TP are more efficient, but haven't spent enough time with these.

The p-rod tube was a very good change. 

Figuring the 1701's tube is about 1/3 less volume, would be about 1/3 fewer shots at the same settings (making it 30 shots rather than 45).

Just an update for future reads of this thread .....
Took the long tube 1701P to the Oregon State FT Championship over the weekend.
In chatting and viewing a few other Crosman pistols on hand, looks as if this longer p-rod tube simply made it a 1720P 

As for shot count with the Milo74 Reg and a light hammer, yup @ 46-48 shots tossing the JSB 7.33's @ 730 fps. ( Just shy of 9 ft lbs ) on a 3k fill and 1.5k set point.  Good enough to do most any Pistol FT round 

As for Oregon and the NEW pistol in the hands of a pistol newbie .... No complaints with the little pistol doing me proud !
Think the tune is going to stay where it's at

Hammer weight was further reduced using 100% MDS nylon with the OEM striker threaded in.
Weight was @ 16-17grams if my memory's correct 
Reg output bumped up to @ 1500#

The MDS nylon hammer weighed in at 8 gm, compared to 54 gm for the OEM hammer.  It is working well in my 1701, which I have set up for 4 fpe, for AP silhouette shooting.  Any concern about how well the nylon will hold up with the Crosman drop down sear?

Wear with the drop away sear ( Like a Marauder also has ) will be nothing worth noting.
* Snag edge sears like 22XX guns would not work eating away the corner from such minimal engagement.
