This is from a 1995 issue of American Rifleman. Notice the early Rekord trigger with sliding side safety, the scope rail, and the exposed breech stock. And the pricetag...she's always been up there in price!
With the exception of the 16" sleeved barrel vs. the 19" muzzle-weighted barrel, the 1989 Marksman 56FTS below is identical:

I don't know why but I've always liked the look of the exposed breach 98 when compared to the covered breach. To me some, but not all, break barrels just look better that way. The Diana/RWS 36 would be another.

I agree, Benny. I think on the 98 the exposed breech kind of highlights that uber-cool sleeved barrel. I've always been a sucker for the "bull barrel" look on rifles.
I'm still thinking I'll buy a sleeved 98 barrel for the Marksman, whenever SSSO gets them in stock again.
