I think i ruined my scope

ok, so, instead of doing the smart thing and buying  Burris signature zee scope rings and inserts I cut up a matchbook and placed them under the rear scope mount to compensate for the barrel droop on my Benjamin trail NP .22.   well, I had to place about 8 strips of cut matchbook cardboard to get it within useable range but while doing so I cranked it down so tight that I dented the scope tube.  its a Centerpointe 3-9x40 scope.  the first couple shots were on point but after that it seemed it kept losing zero after a shot or two.  Did I destroy my scope??  Im not happy with myself right now for being cheap.

thankfully you didn't loose much.. buy a drooper mount and don't worry about shims man. new scope too.

I've got a Nitro Venom with droop.  I used Sun Adjustable Rings.  They can compensate for droop and windage.  The other option is bending your barrel, which is not that big of a deal.

For a relatively inexpensive scope, I'm fond of the Hawke Sport series myself.

I haven't had to do this on any of my airguns yet but if I did I would use this method. Epoxy putty in the stick form would make this method cleaner and neater.

I've used the Hawke adjustable rings - though in the one piece configuration - and they work fine but you may end up fiddling around with it more than you like.
At least that was my experience. I've also used the Burris Signature Zee rings and like them a lot. They are a bit more costly than some alternatives but
do a good job.

"You might want to take a look a the Hawke Dovetail to Weaver adjustable adapters - 17021 (short version) and the 17021S (longer version).
Both have stop pins and can be adjusted to compensate for any droop you may encounter. Match one of these up with some low profile Weaver
rings and you should good to go. "

I've used this last combination on several occasions with great success. It takes care of droop but not windage problems unless you match it up with some
windage adjustable Weaver rings. It's also one of the least expensive and least labor intensive ways to go.

ok thanks guys.  all great suggestions!  although, I was shooting it today and the accuracy at 25 yards is really bad.  I want to get a new o ring and try some predator polymags.  Ive been using Crossman domed and jsb's.  i know ill need to get the new mounts and maybe a new scope but im pretty disappointed with this air rifle.  I think it may actually be time to stop talking about it and actually step up to PCP rather than sink more money into the benji.  I like it just not very accurate.  ive been shooting from a bag to try to eliminate any error coming from me.  i know its hard to compare considering the damage ive done but still, maybe this isn't a great hunting gun for me.  i think it will be pretty hard to kill a sparrow at 25 yards or more with this air rifle.  anybody have accuracy issue with their Benji Trail NP .22?  I know i could send it away to be cleaned up a bit which i was gonna do but i started thinking that could be extra money put toward the marauder or another PCP...

Use film negatives for scope shims. works good and you can add or take away as needed, a match pack is way to soft and thick. David

if you're shooting directly from the bags, you won't hit anything. you still need to have your hand between the forearm and whatever you use to support the gun.

 IMHO go with the Burris rings.................If they have a stop pin, that fits the stop pin hole. Take the stop pin out and make sure it fits tight into the hole before mounting. Order the insert kit with the rings. The Sun rings gimbals also, but have a rube goldberg set of screws to be adjusted and locktited to prevent moving. Both are a PITA to zero and the Burris Zee have less moving parts and no locktite require.

 Shims in scope rings bend scope tubes, you say only a few thousandths, think about it this way, add that same few thousandths to a pellet, now force it down the barrel.  For example wrap a few rounds of film or tape around a pellet  (trim half off to simulate top scope ring) and try to insert shimmed pellet into your rifle's chamber. You actually bend the scope twice,  each ring bends the tube.  Some scopes tolerate a lot of bending, other don't.  One thing very noticeable is parallax turret binding. Too exaggerate this effect use one high ring and one medium ring, tighten down, waa laa bent scope tube just like using shims.

 The Burris Zee synthetic inserts have superior scope grip compared to anything else available, bar none. The weak link is the rail clamp, only one clamp screw, don't over torque.

Get a UTG Drooper Scope Rail.... works Great i have one installed on my break barrel... and I also bent a scope, same as the one you did. A little shim is ok, but after that it can cause problems.

You lose zero most likely from your scope slipping from the mount. There is a pattern on tightening the scope from the mount and don't need to be gorrila tight otherwise you are just denting your scope tube. Have your tried marking your scope with a pencil . Just mark a line fore and aft and if your line disappeared aft then it slipped backwards or opposite if line fwd disappeared.
