Go robins!

I was watching the birds in my yard again earlier today (as well as a few nervous HOSPs that never sat still long enough for a shot) and something caught my attention . The robins in my yard were aggressively going after any grackles they saw! Even if they appeared across the yard! The robins would even chase them around and through various trees and shrubs.

Anyone else notice such things as well?

Today yes, I was plinking in the back yard with a new to me Benjamin 1981 vintage 342, the Robins were in the yard working the bugs after my nephew mowed the grass this afternoon, before the storms hit tomorrow.
The robins don't mind my shooting as I never harass them, and it is just part of our daily back yard activity.

A blackbird (common grackle) landed by my dogs food dish, and 2 robins chased him away.

I don't see many hosps here, but do see collared doves, pigeons, and grackles.

The local game warden and I talked about the grackles a while back, and we have since had a talk about the collared doves, they are not on the (no shoot) list and he says take all I want (8 in the freezer so far) dove gumbo in the future...

  I noticed something similar between the robins and the starlings.    When the robins were passing through, the starlings were very shy.    A starling would leave in a hurry when the robins landed in the same tree.

I'm figuring that the bullys (starlings) don't enjoy being on the receiving end

Yea the Robins will put up with the yellow beaks in the winter but nesting they don't put up with anything ( even me  )

I have about 4 robins that come around looking for bugs.  The blacks and starlings don't come to the yard much any more sense they found out how unwanted they are but the Blue Jays and the Robins plat chase quite often.  Come to think about it I did see a couple putting a grackle on the run.  One day Mr. Fat Robin was in his bath tub and a Dove came wanting to play in the water too but this robin just looked at Mrs Dove as if to say, " You Want To Do What?!!! You crrrazzy goofy Dove."  They do get funny to watch.

I have two sets of Robins nesting in my yard and they BEAT on the grackles that come around. Its because the grackles, in enough numbers, will raid the Robins nest and eat the eggs or the young.

When it gets to were the Robins are loosing...some help arrives and evens out the playing field

we have many robins as our yard is wooded, but in particular every am he sit in the tree by a window and flys into the window thump thump.  every am about 630, its getting old.  but as for other species they don't put up with many others

Try hanging a old CD on some fishing line in front of the window, it will spin in the wind and scare him off

I saw something funny this morning.  One mail Grackle was trying to court  a prospective mate and that upset a male cardinal that tried his best to run them off but he was only one and thew smallest of the bunch.  well this BIG fat robin from next door heard the grackles mouthing off at the cardinal and came on the run.  He looked like a tank with wings and when the female grackle saw him coming that was all she wanted and she took off.  The male grackle took off with her and started where he was so rudely interrupted in another tree.  Mr. Robin was satisfied with the results so he went back to what he was doing.  Robins and Cardinals teaming up on Grackles is just another episode in the back yard.
