filling the stock

I had a few partially used tubes of caulk from old projects that I figured should be thrown out since they would most likely set up soon and be useless.  Then I remembered the posts about filling the 880 stock with caulk to add some weight.  So I took off the butt place and shoved the nozzle in and started pumping.  I had gone through 3 partial tubes before caulk started oozing out from the screw holes -- it was full.  I put the butt plate back on and checked the balance.  It was amazing how it changed how well I could hold on target!  So I had to try it out from 30 ft.  It was cutting one slightly larger than bore size hole in the target.  The gun is definitely heavier but shifting the weight and balance sure does improve how well I can shoot with it.  Now I think I will have to put a better scope on it than the cheapo 4x15 that is now on it.  Strange to have a scope that costs more than the gun but that may just be an indication that the gun is actually worth a bit more than they typically sell for.

I have heard of using the foam in a can.  I imagine the caulk is quite a bit heavier and would change the balance point more.  I'll file the caulk idea in case i need more weight on a rifle.  Thanks for the idea.

What kind of caulk did you use?   How long was drying?   Is it dry yet?   I used silicone to seal up the lead in my first S1k, and just that bit took a while to dry (a week I think), and actually pulled away due to shrinkage, after about 6 months.

I used ACE siliconized acrylic window and door caulk for no other reason than it is what I had.  I imagine it will take a looong time to dry since air is not getting to it.  It is sealed up in the stock so I could use it right away, no need for it to be dry.

I grabbed two tubes of silicone today while at Home Depot for this. I got the cheapest ones I could and they were still about $5.25 a piece.  My wife saw it in my bags and said are you  gonna caulk something? I said ,yah. She said good; about time. I said I'll get right on it. Ha Ha

Yeah...  Like I say, it took a week with the little blob (around 1.5"x4"or so), that I did the first time.   I left the pad off, and it smells, so just a heads up guys

Some of the silicone caulks release acetic acid (vinegar odor) as they cure.  This stuff which is water cleanup, doesn't so no odor coming from the gun.  Who knows, it may never totally cure and always be like jello in there.

Beware of the foam in a Can, or the 2 part expanding foam.

They will split your stock if not careful as it expands.

We used to use it as a filler in radio control boats, I have seen it split a fiberglass hull/deck seam more than once...

   I posted quite a few times on this. I also used waternbased caulk. The cheapest stuff home depot had on hand. The balance is amazing and yup, makes it less hold sensitive.

   I put a $30 Bushnell scope from Wally World on mine. So the 880 was $44 at Wally world, and the scope was $30. I can deal with that

I used Wallyworld 3$ a tube silicone. Gives a whole different feel when shooting. Makes a good gun feel great. Still haven't figured out what to do with lawyer trigger. Guess I'll start with lube and polishing contact points.

DO NOT USE EXPANDING FOAM!!! USE CHEAP SILICONE CAULK. Expanding foam will split the stock and doesn't add enough weight.

 So what do i need to fill my stock with??? As I need to do this and dampen the noise as the stock is hollow

  I like cheap silicone from a caulking tube, whatever the cheapest lowes or Home Depot has.

    For your Hatsan you may just want to stuff it with rags. That is what I did to my 2 Gamo's as they didn't need the weight, just needed to stop the hollow stock from ringing. I stuffed them with cut up tee shirts and old (clean  ) socks

Since it is totally sealed, I seriously doubt that it will dry anytime soon.  I have had opened tubes of caulk that dried out in the nozzle but the main body of the tube was not dry at all, and that was after several years.  It doesn't really matter if it ever dries.... it sure is not sloshing around in there.

You can buy a non-expanding or a minimally expanding foam also....
That's what I used in my Big Cat stock.
No problems...

It doesn't matter of all if the silicone caulk sets up in the 880 stock. It will probably always be rubbery since the stock is sealed. I don't know if other makes of plastic stocks are open at the front or not. If open might cause a problem. My 880 now feels like a wood stock. Balance is perfect. I don't know about other guns, but the first act of a new 880 owner should be to fill the stock with Silicone.
