PVC Target Stand with Backstop

I saw a few others here have made target stands out of PVC so I decided to make one with the addition of a backstop.  Mine is 5’ x 3’ with a 4’ base.   I used two 12 x 9 8oz canvas drop cloths as the backstop.  I folded the 12’ over three times and then draped them over the frames.  The middle crossbar can be moved to the top for pistol shooting.  I just drilled a couple holes and used bolts to hold it up.  No nuts needed.  The two frames behind the target frame do not have crossbars in the middle.

The options for targets are endless.  I used the metal binder clips attached with zip ties for the target holders and I secured the knockdown squirrel target with 2 bolts and wing nuts for easy removal.  I think I’m going to get another knockdown target and make a smaller bell target that could be hung from one of the crossbars.  Current bell target is 10 x 12 with 4 bull’s eye size options.

All my guns are under 700fps and not one pellet or bb has made it past the 10th layer of canvas and there are 12 layers.  I shoot in my basement from 15 or 32 feet.  I’m 1 foot shy of International shooting completion distance.  Most pellets flatten and fall to the floor when they hit any of the steel targets but there is an occasional splatter of lead that will fly around a bit.  That is why we always wear eye protection.

The cost was right around $80.00.

My Crosman 2289 build has inspired me to make a better target stand/pellet trap. 

I created a 5' x3' target stand with a backstop.

After a while I think you are going to see pellets getting through the last 2 layers of fabric. You might want to put a piece of metal in the back of the kill zone area.  I also have some the crosman zombie swingers you have at the bottom.  Not a bad deal for $10 at walmart.  I shoot them outside and every so many shots I hear a ricochet but I'm 30 to 50 yards away.  I would be extra careful at 32 feet indoors.

When it starts getting close I'll have to replace the canvas which is the down side being $20.00 for a 12x9.  I've used 18 layers of the canvas on 4 other smaller traps and haven't had any pellets or bb's make it through all the layers yet and I've put 1000s and 1000s of rounds into them.  I was getting close on my main trap and had to replaced the canvas. So, I may have to add an additional drop cloth to this stand.  We'll see how it holds up.     

I agree about the ricochet's but with my guns being under 700fps that isn't much of a problem, at least so far, and I've shot those steel targets 100s and 100s of times from 32 feet with a little splatter from time to time.  I think the key is the power of my guns, heck some of my pistols don't even penetrate the canvas, the pellets or bb's just bounce off and fall to the floor.  I'm sure a pellet going upwards of 1200fps would eat up the canvas real quick and create some serious ricochet splatter when hitting the steel targets at 32 feet and I never shoot bb's at anything other then paper or soda cans.

What about finding a piece of natural and hang it between the fabric?  This way if the pellets do go through the fabric, it will stop at the metal and then just fall to the floor.

Would also think about putting something over the top to contain most of the splatter.

No kit, I just went to Lowes and purchased twelve  5' ¾” pvc tubes, six ¾” elbows, two  ¾” crosses, four ¾” end caps and two bags of ¾” tees 10 per bag & two, 1” tees if you want to make the middle target crossbar move up and down.  You could get a 1” pvc tube for the middle crossbar but I just used the 3/4” tube and wrapped tape around the ends until it fit tight. 

I made it 5' tall and 3' wide with a 4' base.  No middle crossbars on the two frames holding the canvas and on the target holding frame I put crossbars at 20, 40 and 60 inches.  I put the two frames holding the canvas 6” apart and the target frame is 8” from the backstop.  The cross member holding the frames together are 40" high.  You just need to make your cuts accordingly.  A chop saw would work great but I just used a cheap miter box and saw.

I think you could use one of the pictures as a drawing or diagram.  The dimensions are really up to you.

Very creative set up! But instead of spending another $20 on a replacement canvas, hanging some sheets of ballistic Kevlar material would last a lot longer and can be picked up on Ebay for a slightly larger investment ($35 for 10, 10x12 sheets) . I am planning to upgrade my duct seal box with some as well using a layered approach with the Kevlar and thin foam padding.

now there is a man making the most out of what he's got and very determined to shoot lol. when canvas wears out try to get some scraps of thick carpet lasts really long
