FWB 124 score, I hope!!

I just picked up a San Rafael Beeman FWB 124 Sporter w/ Beeman 1.5 X 5 scope for $40 at a garage sale. The serial number is 124xx, so I am thinking it has some age. The bluing is about 90% with a little surface rust but no pitting. The stock has no serious dings or scratches but the finish is only about 50%. The stock is the least of my worries as I am an experienced refinisher. I believe the seal is gone because the pellet never moved when I test fired it. Everything is smooth and locks up nice when I cock it and the trigger breaks very nicely. I thing this will make a wonderful protect gun. This is my first FWB, so any tips about breaking her down and rebuilding would be greatly appreciated. I have read others post about finding a diamond in a coal mine but never thought it would happen to me.

Get the JM kit for the 124. Expect around 850/875 fps with 7.9 gr pellets and about 650 with the 10.5 gr. That serial # puts your gun from 1977 to early 78. I see Josh has already beaten me to it, but you get the prize for the cheapest find yet !! I paid $60 for mine but you've won the bragging rights ! Great find.

Thanks for all the offers but I have been looking a "signature" air rifle to re-build from stem to stern. My $40 rifle will make a great flagship for my collection. I will post pictures next week when I get back to my computer. I will try to post a continuous photo history of her "makeover" since there seems to be some interest in her story.
Josh, I may be giving you a call if I run into trouble. Thanks for the help. You could always run down here to Greer next weekend and see her and shoot in our "Spring Shoot" that my church and the Boy Scouts sponsor. You can find the info in SC shooting info gate or it is in the "events" gate.

Great find,
It seems that I have the sister to the rifle you found. My parents original 124 deluxe, serial #12475. It has Imported by Beeman Precision Airguns Jnc (instead of the Inc) stamped on the right side of the receiver. It has the real nice palm swell and the real hand cut checkering. My parents bought it around the time I was born, 1978. I shot it growing up and when it stopped shooting, it just sat for 20+ years. I had the stock refinished locally (dyed and tru oil) and the checkering recut, the gun was reblued and tuned by David Slade. It is a sweet shooter, tuned to replicate factory velocity for the time and low cocking effort. I can hold a dime size group with it at 15 yards with the open sights and any JSB pellet: RS, Express or Exact. I spent a lot of money getting her going again , but I don't regret it, I always had a soft spot in my heart for her.

Congratulations on a great buy on a fantastic vintage springer! You win the prize for the best price paid for one that I've heard! Put in a Maccari spring kit and get it back and running and you are sure to have a sumpremely accurate, easy cocking rifle that you'll get tons of fun out of.

Another local Sporter shooter here. Email send with info. Hope I can offer any help with your new rifle. That's about the lowest price I've ever heard for a FWB Sporter. You must have a lucky rabbits foot in your pocket.

Deal of the month right there my friend.
I'd buy a truck load of them at that price, make no mistake.
Congrats on a killer deal, and on getting a darn fine specimen of a rifle to play with, you lucky dog you!!

Looks like its got potential. I was going to have my buddy who operates the spray room of a custom cabinet shop stain, tone and lacquer my stock to get the color just right, but instead had the stock maker up the road stain it with some alcohol based dye and use some tru oil on it. I figure I can keep coating it throughout time when needed with more Tru oil or waterlox and refresh it when needed. My stock was beech. He also recut the checkering as it needed sharpened and cleaned out, and was supposedly missing a few lines from the factory. Good luck on your project.

Update;
I changed the seals only, hoping the spring was still OK since I wanted a low power shooter anyway. NOT! When I pull the trigger I just get a puff and the pellet never moves. I have a new spring on the way, but here is what she looks like now.

Looking good so far. What was the serial # on yours. I was curious as to how close ours were in production, mine being #12475. The standard spring Slade put in mine is great, easy to cock, yielding about 820 fps with JSB RS and 775 with the JSB 8.4 Exact if I remember right, and it is a dead stick....no vibes.
I hope everything works out for ya.

VS, mine deffinately is the sister to yours. My serial number is 12451 so they were probably built the same week if not the same day. Thats pretty amazing that two of these classics end up so close together that were born at the same time. My spring should be here tomorrow so hopefully by next week we will be hole punching.

Well all's well that ends well. New spring installed (after a fight) and she is shooting smoothly. It took about 10 shots to zero the scope and then I shot this 10 shot group. I think shes a keeper and should get even better once the seal gets seated and the spring breaks in.
