2289 pellet choice

 I think I'm going to call my 2289 done. Here's what I've done so far. Flat top valve and piston lighter trigger spring and polished sear,  steel pivot pin, steel breach, 3-9x40 Leapers and see thru mounts. I've left the transfer port stock for now it dumps all the air at 10 pumps. At 10 yards with 10 pumps 12" barrel 530 fps with 14.66 H&N FTT groups .75" CTC off rest. I was using CPHP but was getting too many fliers it would group 3-4 shots real close then the next 3-4 could be anywhere within 1.5" . Anyone else have this with Crosman pellets?

Yes, I get more fliers with CPHP.
JSB Exact Heavies shoot great.
Better than great actually.
This was shot from 20 Yards.
I think it was 5 shots.

My 2240 likes jsb pellets too. So does the old Sears gun I have.  Tried cphp's in both and although they shoot good just not as consistently as good as the jsb's.

I upgraded my 2289g with 12" barrel with the steel breach kit and a 3.5-10x44 TruGlo scope. At ten yards most of my shots are within one inch of point of aim.
I shoot from my desk window using the window jam to steady my shots. Most of my shots are done with my scope at 5X. I nail tuna cans on a telephone pole eighty feet from my window and can hit it 4 out of 5 tries with this setup.
All I shoot are the CPHP in the 500 count tins.

At 10 yards that gun should stack pellets.  Cphp's are acceptable but I would think a better pellet would shoot  way less than 1"

Yep, H&N FTT's are good pellets and should be tighter than 3/4" at 10 yards. Most of my airguns shoot H&N FTT pellets well.

Mine likes the CPUMs and HN FTTs a lot, 3 out of 5 shots are in one hole with the other 2 BARELY missing.  1/2" grouping, easy with those two pellets.

I forgot to mention that I shimed the part of the barrel band that fits inside the pump tube. I tightened the band screw pretty snug. How tight or loose do you keep the screw?

I tighten mine to the point of nearly stripping out, lol, i have bad habits with screws...i have stripped out more than i care to admit.

I didn't like the fact that the POI changed depending on how tight the barrel band screw was so I drilled out the barrel band of a 1322 to 7/16" for a nice tight fit. Accuracy improved.

RWS Superdomes but I'm using extended bolt - nickel plated Disco bolt. JSB Diablo Express RS seem to work well too. I've not has as good a luck with RWS Hollow point or H&N hollow point and they also can hang up in the steel breech on the forward screw. Short range they are fine but not for longer shots and I hate fiddling with getting them into the barrel.

Highly recommend a steel breech, longer bolt, weaker valve spring and a sight like a red dot BTW.

Thanks for the tips, I'll keep trying. I really like this gun and am not unhappy with what it's doing  just trying to make it the best I can. On a different subject Stern86 sorry to see that your stuck with an xl 1100 I've got one that is at the top of my list when I need a heavy hitter. I'd shoot it a lot more if it wasn't so heavy.

I'm considering selling mine, it needs washers in the breech and a trigger and possibly a new ram as the one in it is a bit weak or so it seems.  Before I took my washers out and trigger it actually grouped pretty good but it just ended up not being the gun for me...my nitro venom ended up being the better gun, by a mile.
