Sooo, I decided to dive in, Ordered HW97K thumbhole, synthetic stock, along with scope, mounts and pellets from Pyramid air. Given that I am a long time powder burner, and noob to AG, what sagely words of advice is available as I proceed into the madness?

Welcome and shoot it like you stole it at first! The 97 is a great rifle. I love mine and it is a real keeper for sure!

Like Mike said....shoot the snot out of it!!
I have the beech thumbhole SS look in 177 and it is one heck of a rifle!!
Smooth as glass, quiet, gorgeous and accurate!!!

Also be patient with it. AGs can be tricky to get accurate results with if you're accustomed to shooting other arms. Although, you made a great choice in the HW97K, so you may be hitting the bullseye every time straight away! They are a pleasure to shoot!

Couple of tips Carl.
Clean the barrel as soon as you un box her.....pull thru with patches. Most of us will put a couple drops Goo Gone on the first pass.
I shoot mine off a Caldwell bag with the gun resting directly on the bag. The bag is about $18 bucks off EBay....$2.00 10 lb bag of kitty litter to fill it and you're set.
The breech on mine, 177, is a bit tight. I cannot get Crossman Premier Lights to fit without a hammer!! I found JSB 8.4, 7.3 and H&N Field Target Trophy in 4.51 head size perform the best!
She has a snappy kick so use good mounts. I use double strap BKL rings and they haven't budged after more than 10,000 rounds!!

since I see you own multiples, what do you recommend for getting it to shoot accurately? I am learning the artillery hold, and am used to shooting 1 MOA in powder rifles, (using good reloads) but new to AG. I will cleaning it first off, then after installation of scope, try a variety of pellets in the 14 grain range, what else should I remember out of the gate.

Couple of things I might be able to help with Carl.
First off, get lots of lead down the tube and don't worry about tight groups for the first tin or so.
Mine shoots great off a front bag with rifle rested directly on the bag.
Stock screws on mine never loosened up, but keep an eye on your scope.
For the first 3 or 4 tins mine preferred heavies, JSB 10.3. Now she will shoot mids, 7.87 - 8.64 beautifully!!
I know yours is 22, but I can't see her not liking JSB or H&N mid weights.

I had heard and planned for at least 500 rds before I worried about accuracy, will be running JSB 18.1 grains, Beeman 14.66 grain domed, and JWS 14.3 grain domed for break in.\

Those 18 grain are bit heavy in my estimation and expertise. My HW97 likes 14.72 grain Beeman FTS copper plated dome pellets as it's diet. Now my Diana 56TH which is a BEAST loves the 18.1 grain pellets!

I have the same rifle in .177 with the Vortek kit installed. It shoots very accurately at 50 yards and has a soft thud sounding recoil. It's a joy to shoot for sure and I'm very satisfied with this purchase. The only thing I don't like is the weight - this thing is HEAVY!

Hi Carl, first of all, I agreed with mtsheron70 about not wise in using heavy pellet. For my .177, I have tried the H&N Baracuda Match 10.65g and the piston was slamming too hard as compared to my pellet of choice, the JSB Exact 8.44gr or the 7.87gr JSB express.

this is what I would suggest based on my own findings and what works for me: (every AG is different)
1) mechanically centre your scope by counting the max and min clicks in both the elevation and windage. then set them at their mid-point.
2) mount your scope on a good scope mount like a BKL 1"
3) without adjusting the turrets see where the POI lands in a 15 - 25 yards range. if you need to adjust the elevation a lot in order to reach your POA then, chances are you have barrel droop.
(I found out the hard way after sending back two brand new Hawke scopes thinking it was the scope problem when it was me not realizing that I had adjusting too much of the elevation to reach my POI; near max and thus pinning the inner tube way out of its true center for a free-floating position)
4) shim the rear to compensate and you will have more usable elevation adjustments
5) try different brand of pellets and of different size and weight till you find the right one for YOUR gun
6) I mainly bench rest by holding the stock near the screws and placing my hand on a bag. (make sure your table or whatever you are placing the bag on is SOLID, any slight movements will shift your POI
7) practice, practice, practice

most importantly, enjoy your rifle and learn as you go. works for me! good luck.

The HW Rekord triggers are phenomenal, yours will have one (I haven't checked to be sure), and they are worth the added cost of the HW's imo. I have a HW30 and it is awesome to shoot. In fact, I have been thinking (sort of) to get a PCP rifle, but always have in the back of my mind to just get another HW of some kind instead.
