General Scope Question
«
on:

Hello. When I bought my .25 marauder, I purchased a Leapers 4-16X50 mil dot scope. I like the scope, but I realized I would like the AO control on the side instead of up front. So now I bought the Leapers 4-16X44 mil dot scope with the side adjuster.
This is the new scope:

My question is this. What is the advantage of the 50 size vs 44 size? Am I losing anything?

Can you not see it is brighter?
You will be able to shoot a few minutes later in the day, too.

So the 50 will be brighter than the 44mm?

Bigger front bell lets in more light.

i have that same scope
http://www.leapers.com/prod_detail.php?mitem=optic&level1=Tube_Diameter&level2=30mm&itemno=SCP3-U416AOIEW&status=&mtrack=1m1
FWIU all else being equal the larger bell should allow for a little more light , but the accushot 30mm series look to have better coatings than the the leapers 1 inch series and a 30mm tube is supposed to be a little brighter than a 1 inch tube ...... all else being equal again . i don't have a leapers to compare but i'm sure there's a few folks here that do and will share their results .

Fwiw take the objective size and divide it by the power you plan to use the scope at in low light and if that number is greater than 5 you are wasting weight/size your younger eyes can utilize a 5mm exit pupil while and older eye diminishes. So at 10x in low light 50mm starts to make sense lenses and coatings being equal. FWIW I tested a 56 mm VXL 30mm tube, a 50mm VX3 30mm tube , and just for laughs a Zeiss 1.8-5.5x38 all at 5.5x after 630-7pm and the 50mm couldn't make out a tree line clearly at 75 yards, the 56mm was clear, while the Zeiss could show pine needles. Just saying the long argued 50mm objective isn't the only thing to look at. FWIW I no longer have the VX3s but have Kahles euro scopes on all my powder burners only because they didn't have a Zeiss Victory in the power range I wanted.

It should allow in more light. However, you will be fine with a 44. The difference is noticeable if you are shooting in low light conditions, aside from that it doesn't really matter.

I was just referencing optics in general and have no hands on use with either scope. I would run whatever you buy through a box test just to verify repeatability.
