decided i would like to get the rws 280 in .22 for plinking and shooting in my home. None seem to be had in .22 so i was wondering what the other possibillities would be. the walther lgv master is a choice but i think its kind of...ugly.
maybe de-tune a 34? i have guns with power, i want something more quiet. $400 is really my budget.

HW50S. With a tune you will be knocking along at about 11fpe, maybe a fuzz more. Lightweight, near no hold sensitivity, and right about your budget. The stroke of the piston is really short on these and it makes the firing cycle short and quick. I have one in .177 and its super accurate. Fairly quiet too.
BUT.
Be prepared to put a Delrin insert in the cocking arm to prevent galling on the compression tube. Just a few bucks and takes about 10 minutes.

A 50S or a Diana 34/B25 with a JM OS kit. Mine are .177. The 50 is about 10.5 fpe and the 34 is about 12.5. Both are very smooth.

I prefer the LGV for 400/430 in .22 for that power level. Master if you might want to use an aperture style sight is nice.
The 50s is twangy by comparison, but the 50s is nice and also light. I admit, I got hooked on the vintage LGV and personally like the locking barrel. Neither are broke in fully, but I was getting about 11.25FPE with a 50s and about 1/2 - 3/4 more with the Walther.
The Walther seems to fit almost all pellets just a tad bit snug, which I love. Not tight, but they seem fitted.

I forgot...one thing that probably shouldn't bug me as much as it does, but it does: The cocking effort of the 50s seems to me to be the same as that of the R9 but only puts out about 80% of it's power.

Yeah the HW50s cocking is at least 34lbs because of that double articulate joint. But it makes a shorter cocking slot so a more stable gun and one main action screw up front instead of 2. Add a muzzle brake which will help in the cocking. The 22cal 50s is flat out to 35 maybe 40 yards tops. Shoots 580-600fps and deadly accurate. Worth the full tune.6.8lbs and 40" long but alittle fat in the foregrip stock. The HW30s /r7 is much easier to carry ,cock and shoot. 18lbs cocking 5.5-6.2lbs and 38" long. in 22cal probably 25 yards flat out.

I vote for the HW50. Mine is in .177 and has had a little work to it and is shooting AA 8.4 pellets at about 775-780 fps for a bit over 11 fpe. People complain about the cocking effort, but one small mod I did to mine that significantly lessened the perceived effort was to remove the chisel detent and cut off 1/2 coil from the detent spring. I then polished the spring ends and chisel face with fine sand paper, cleaned out old lube and then added Maccari moly to everything. The lock up still feels rock solid, but breaking the barrel initially is far easier and that right there seems to make the cocking stroke overall feel much smoother and easier. I have plans to later polish the barrel pivot shims when I next have the rifle apart, but for now, it might be a while before I do anything else. Mine isn't pellet fussy and shoots any of the standard dome pellets by JSB, H&N and Crosman very well. I get under 1/2" groups of 5 at 22 yards all the time and many smaller when I'm shooting well. The size, balance and weight are really nice and overall, with the Rekord trigger, the HW50 is a VERY nice package.
I shoot mine regularly out to 45 yards at my squirrel FT with largest kill zone and drop it nearly all the time. Over time, my plan is to shoot more at 50 yards so I'll get practice for those long distance field targets. I plan to try mine for that some time in the spring to see what it can do.

Hi steve,
I read these replies with awe. How dang big a house you got?
I'd think for targets under 25 yards a lot less power is needed. Match Rifles have a lot less power, and are accurate to 25 yds easy. Easy as heck to cock too.
I'd say you need comfort, rather than kill possibilities.
HW30 is a cutie.

I absolutely adore my used Daisy Avanti 853 from CMP. It gets boring, quietly putting one pellet after another in the same hole at 10M.
