Iron Sights for Prod

OK, it is a little shorter than a Prod:



After trying the scope, it is just the wrong application for close distance for me.  I don't think a red dot will be much better.  I am going to try some iron sights, but don't want to give up the repeater (mag).  I saw this thread by Lloyd.  http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=45508.msg426459#msg426459  It raises the sights up more than I'd like.  I am thinking of lowering such that the top of the rear sight is close to top of mag and aiming is not blocked.   

I removed the LPA from my 1377 last night and did some preliminary mock-ups.  Seems like it should work.  I am looking at modifying: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=121233169629 by widening the middle slot and beveling to fit LPA dovetail.  For front blade have just taped a Crossman plastic sight to the shroud for the mock-up. 

 Anyway looking for pics or other ideas from others that have already blazed this path.

That lower profile mount you linked would be better.

Green lasers show-up even in the daylight.

Just a thought.

Thx Hill.  I did hook up a green laser to it, and it does work ok, but wasn't able to get enough adjustment to bring it on target, but didn't try shimming.  If I can get away from a scope, red dot, or laser, that will make my holster search much easier.  I might retry that if I am not happy with iron sights.

Well, changing the breech is out, but does that just mount to dovetail?  It would seem that if you can see over the mag for that sight, it would be fine behind the mag for more of a pistol set-up vs carbine?  That just one of the williams sights?

Yea, I've seen some, but given the large size of the pistol, it is hard to judge fit.  I have one I modified for scope and it works, but not great.  This is one of those things that are hard to buy without a test fit.   

PS: The piece I need to mount the LPA to, won't be here for a couple of weeks.  In the meantime, might try remounting the laser with a shim, and see how I like that.  Laser only, takes a little to get use to it.   So far, my experience with bright green lasers is, they work well for close ground prey where you can walk the laser to the target.  For tree based critters, a bit harder, but still doable.

What would you think about using a lanyard/sling (similar to the pic) to hang the pistol?

Some like to do this for a more stable shooting position ( with proper adjustment - push the gun out until tight ), an extra point of contact. If you like this idea, I can get back to you with a couple of ideas.

Just added a front sight directly to the shroud.  This was a 1700 that had a shroud added, but no reason it couldn’t be done to a P-Rod. (Have a P-rod, but never bothered to add a sight as it’s too big to actually use as an iron sight pistol).

Used a left over QB78 front sight (old onw without fiber optic).  Sat it on top and taped it down for tests. 

Once I was sure it would work and it was in the right spot (standing vertical), outlined around the sight with pencil.

Removed sight and scraped.sanded all the finish off inside the pencil outline.

Scarped/sanded the bottom of the sight to be sure it was clean.

GLUED (good slow cure JB weld) the sight in place, using Q-tips to clean up any “ooze”.

Waited a day for a full cure.

Sight had a screw hole, so drilled and tapped it while it was solidly glued in place (basically an insurance screw, as the sight isn’t going anywhere).

RS,   Sounds like a good procedure to follow for the front sight.   What is your rear sight, and do you think it could view over a Prod mag?


Hill, I wouldn't have thought of that.  I do have a single point bungee type sling that was used with my 10/22 in G36 clothing.  I think you are right, for a pistol the elastic probably won't stretch far enough, or be hanging too low.  I think I'd still prefer the secureness of a holster too.

Should work,  the P-rod mag kind of sits "side saddle", so it's not real high over the center line of the pistol.

I can see over the marauder clip,sitting in the dove tail.it is almost as low as it can go,two lines on the side.I said bnm breech so it could recognized as a clip with dove tails,not to get one,although it works as expected,so get one

OK, looks like the Williams with adjustable blade sight is an option if LPA does not work out.   I haven't had one before, and because I see it overhangs the side, is it rather delicate?  Such that it gets bumbed on holster or jacket, it would need realignment?  Or fairly robust?

I treat it like I paid for it and would have to buy another.it does seem pretty sturdy.Williams makes a lot of sights

    I'll throw in my $.02.    Williams WGRS54 rear, fits on the dovetail.    Williams Powderburner front ramp w/ a blade or bead, in your choice of heights.    The WGRS is available as a notch or peep.

Went a little smaller/lighter/shorter for holster use by converting a 2240 to HiPac.  Tiny air volume, so tiny shot count, but it works well and rides in a Holster just fine (which the larger P-rod or 1700 don’t).

Old style CookedBarn breech was cut for the cheap 2260 type rear sight, but other than being a PIA to get zeroed, it works just fine for a holster gun.

The least expensive way to a short pistol , even though it’s CO2 , uses all Crosman parts.

cut barrel to a little SHORTER than the tube length.
Add a Discovery front sight base and sight.
 (barrel cut adjusted so the sight base ended up about flush with the co2 tube).




Noirmally, am not a fan of co2 in cold weather.  But this one fits in most Colt .45 automatic holsters, and using one of those as a cross draw under my hunting coat keeps it warm and shooting full power even in the cold (if it’s too cold for co2 UNDER my coat, I got no business being outside).

I like the shorty.      Unfortunately, short and powerful don't mix.   I needed something that could put down a raccoon or possum at close range.   Rabies is common here.   This get 16 shots @ 16fpe.

For CO2 fun, I have a CP88.  Works good while yard mowing, on snakes, moles, and mice.

Ordered the Williams WGRS-54, blade, ramp, and front sight, using Williams calculations.  We'll see how they fit.

The parts came today.  The WGRS-54 is not a direct fit for the prod dovetail.     It will fit a crosman steel breech dovetail though.  Not worth sending back so filing away to try to get it to fit. 

PS: it took a few hours of filing.  There is 0.040" diff in the dovetails, and prod is flat topped vs the rounded of the steel breech.  Now on to the front sight.
