New to Air Rifles

I'm an old geezer who loves .22lr plinking.  I just picked up an RWS Diana 48 and want to learn about air rifle shooting.  I'm looking for a scope.  I have an old Leupold Vari-X 3-9 Compact.  Would this work?

Hi, and welcome to the GTA!!  You're starting with an awesome rifle!  As far as the scope, I can't really say.  Check to see if it's airgun rated.  Airguns have a unique back and forth recoil regular guns do not.  Many scopes are not constructed to stand the double recoil.  On top of that there's a kind of torque or twist involved with the spring.  Airguns can destroy scopes.

Welcome from another old geezer. I don't know the answer to your question about your Leupold scope, but there are plenty of others here that do and will answer your question in due time. I'm from Oregon and live close to Leupold's headquarters, and some people in our network work there. My guess is that it will work on some airguns, but yours being a break barrel type of airgun will cause your scope to creep with each firing due to the secondary impact of the airgun's internal spring on the entire airgun's frame.

The scope for break barrel airguns needs to be airgun rated (and properly mounted on the airgun) in order to handle this secondary spring shock.

Your old scope is probably not Air Gun rated, meaning the airguns dual recoil will tear it to shreds, get a cheap scope from Walmart, the 3-9
x40 Centerpoint is air gun rated and is only $70.00...

Be careful when selecting your scope for an air rifle - like many have said before me - the recoil will destroy a scope if its not airgun rated!

Only PCP (precharged pneumatic) rifles, that have no recoil whatsoever, can handle scopes that are not airgun rated.
